Going to attempt the install on my new Vararam CAI tonight. Any tips before I begin? Do I need to disconnect the battery (saw that on a pdf online). I also bought the pre-cut shroud. Thanks!
A vararam is pretty simple to install. Shouldn't take more than an hr. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Hell cutting the shroud is the hardest thing to do...but you have that covered already. No need to disconnect the battery but do so if you feel more comfortable.
A tune will always maximize any upgrade you decide to do but sometimes it's just not worth it unless that's the only mod you're planning on doing. Heck, i have LT headers, Varararm, cutouts, ported TB, etc and I still haven't got a tune. Save the money for additional parts.
tune will maximize the performance. Cold air itself is a huge gain especially on hot days and the ram air effect at hgher speeds is killer to. If you have the template great but be very very very very carefull while slicing the shroud NOT to slip and cut the condensor. I used a carpet hook in my cutter tool so i was pulling and cuttin ginstead of pushing down and cutting. A guy could buy aplastic cutter and try that?? i saw one at harbot freight today for 15 bucks. be slow and should be an easy mod for ya. paul
on a side note - I used the plastic cutter from Harbor Freight and it was amazing! No possible way I would want to use a box cutter of any kind when for $15 one could simply use the weird cutter from Harbor Freight and cut the area needed in 2-3 minutes.
Also to Sparo2, by not tuning your car I promise you that you are leaving a some desirable rwhp on the table as I am pretty sure your car is trying to compensate with either to much fuel or not enough due to all the air flow changing mods you have done. Just installing the Vararam had my car way to lean down low and pig rich from 4K rpm's and up.
OP, tune your car as most reputable tuners will charge you full price the first time and dyno time when you go back after additional mods.
I've had mine on for about a year and I always clean it out every 5K miles or so. I've driven in pooring rain and all. No problems at all. I love my Vararam.
Glue in the gasket using a high quality RTV adhesive. This will insure a tight, long-lasting seal at the filter.
As long as you execute the installation correctly, you should enjoy a long, trouble free boost in performance, even without a tune. Many of us already have.
