Here in NJ, the local township maintenance garage takes ATF, brake fluid, engine oil, diff fluid, and all other flammable automotive liquids for their shop heater.
Here in Phoenix the city has hazardous waste collection events for residents throughout the year at various locations. I save mine up in the old brake fluid containers (marking them "used" with a sharpie) then dispose of them all at once when a collection event comes up. Just need to show a current city water bill and ID. There's one next week in fact... I'm sure other cities have them as well?

Same here. I use a gallon size jug that originally contained olive oil and I put my clutch / brake fluid directly into it. No risk of forgetting that it is used.
We have hazmat pickup a few times a year too.
WHY? in the name of GOD would the disposal of brake fluid be any different than any other oil product! and yes this INCLUDES synthenic oils!!!!!!!! this post sounds like some "eco nut" looking for something to post on a "green " website, about how car people are destroying the enviroment
Because it is. Checker (O'Reilly) and AutoZone are the two most prevalent retailers in my area that recycle used oil and they won't take it.
I have also dealt with one of the local oil recyclers (Safety-Kleen) and they test the oil first for Chlorine contamination from chlorinated brake parts cleaner. If they find any, they won't accept it.
