Default Faster Exhaust

I had bullets on my car without tuning and I switched to the Z06 exhaust cans. I have an 06 A6 ls2 with catted lg pros. The axle back pipes are 2 1/2 to the can(not 3). My car gained .05 in the 8th!

I posted a thread on this when I made the discovery.

I am thinking that the improvement was due to the mixture being better matched with that flow.

I miss my bullets and have a HARD time beliving that the z06 cans can make me faster being that the bullets are almost straight pipes.

Has anyone gone from a tuned car with the z06 cans and the ended up with the bullets or any aftermarket resulting in a gain over the z06 cans???

In a nut shell... properly tuned with each exhaust, which is faster and what comparo was done??

If the z06 cans can shave .05 off the 8th in sny circumstance then thats the real deal!

Someone tell me the hardcore bullets are ultimately faster!

When you are talking .05, in the 1/8 mile, so many factors go into your time, that I don't think you can attribute it soley to the cans. You probably hooked up a bit better/earlier, built up rpms faster, and gained .05. That being said we are talking a few hundredths of a second, so the cans could come into play, but my bet is you just had a better run.

P.S. - Put the damn Bullets back on! Even if the the gain in the 1/8 can be definitively attributed to the mufflers (whiche I doubt,) the gain is nowhere near enough to make up for the loss of that KILLER exhaust sound!!!

P.S.S. - The Bullets are FASTER; feel better now? Now go put the Bullets back on!

The bullets are, IMO, the best quality and best sounding exhaust for the car. As stated above, that miniscule difference in time cannot be attributed to anything but you simply having a better run. The temp that day, the way you drove, how many runs deep you were when each was made, etc...are all factors that could make for a .05 diff and actuallly more than that.

Bottom line, its your car, keep the exhaust that you like the best.

Given that NPP exhaust adds 6hp(GM Quote) Z06 cans should add about the same. That accounts for the 5/100ths reduction. No surprises here.

The quarter mile is a truer test, but, as has been pointed out, many factors can effect elapsed time, MPH is a better indication of horsepower. The ZO6 exhaust might create sufficent increase in back pressure to improve low end torque, thus the improved times.

Backpressure does not create torque. Backpressure prevents the spent exhaust from exiting the cylinder, thus reducing and polluting the the fresh intake charge.

Smaller exhaust pipes can increase velocity at lower exhaust volumes and help torque. Sometimes, especially in the import world, aftermarket exhausts are huge (think about some Hondas you've seen on the street with fart cans bigger than a Z06 through pipe ) and kill exhaust velocity and torque at low rpms . Z06 cans will not kill torque in these cars.

I know the bullets are bad to the bone but going faster is cool too. I do not think it was because I had a better run because my car is consistent. On two trips to the track I got many 8.01s in the 8th and could not break in to the 7s. The exhaust changed and reduced that .05. I know it doesnt seem like much but from what I think any gain in the
8th can just about be doubled in the 1/4. That would mean almost a whole tenth.

I know it sounds crazy but I think of it like this. If a car is tuned to go with something, It will perform better with that set up. After all, the exhaust did not get me into the 11s but it helped me get closer to some of the claimed times by other CF buddies with similar mods.

I finaly got to go to the 1/4 track and my best run was somethhing like this:

60' - 1.915
1/8 - 7.9@91.66
1/4 - 12.15@117.83

Im in miami so I think this is a good time. I'm gonna put on the bullets and get the car retunned. I will get back to you guys and let you know what I find.

I know you have to take 1000 things into consideration but if I go two different days to the same track and am very consistent, then I will believe the improvement is do to the change.

Thank you to all you guys who took the time to write!!!!
