After about 500 miles on new lifters I'm 99% sure I've got one collapsed lifter. The ticking sound sometimes will go away after a few minutes of idle, but any rev of the engine will cause it to start ticking again.
Rockers, rods, and compression are all good. Other than pulling the heads to get at the lifters, what are my options to try to get it to pump up and stay pumped up?
From my research, things that can cause intermittent failure of a lifter to pump up:
1. Overall oil pressure
2. Oil delivery issue to the lifter
3. Clogged lifter
4. Sticky lifter
My overall oil pressure is good. There could be a delivery issue due to blockage, contaminants, low level, etc. The lifter itself could be clogged or sticky.
Some of the suggestions I've seen elsewhere are to put a bottle of trans fluid in for a 100 miles. Overfill the oil, run then drain to normal level. Use compressed air to try to clear any contaminants... Can anyone recommend any of these procedures?
How about using something like Rislone? If it's a "clogged" lifter passage, Rislone (or Seafoam, or others like it) should clean it out. It's worked on my other "old" cars with 100K miles on them... JMHO.
