I'm looking to get an 05 C6 vette but the dealers want an extra arm for one with a factory nav system... I was thinking of putting in a double din aftermarket and just buying a model without the factory nav.. .any downsides to this? anyone already do this? it'd be nice to see what it'll look like and how it turns out.

A lot of forum members love to trash the stock nav as unworthy, and they have done what you're interested in and put in aftermarket units or use portable GPS nav systems.
However, I love my factory nav. I had a 2005 with it, and when I was looking for a Z06 it was a must have.
There are some great aftermarket navs that may have some great features, but AFAIK none of them can be integrated into the other systems in the car like the OE nav is.
I like the touch screen features for my radio/CD system.
But I really like the way the nav integrates with the HUD to display directional arrows and distances to turn points on the HUD - I don't think you can get an aftermarket nav to do that.
I went with a new system, that was one of the 1st things I dumped when I purchased my 05. To be honest. I have GPS on my phone so I wanted quality sound more then arrows on my HUD. But each has their own preference
Check out the Audio Forum at the bottom of the Corvette Forums home page... Those guys know EVERYTHING about C4-C6 audio equipment, very knowledgeable!
I replaced the stock unit on an '08 with the Pioneer F700BT. If you look around you can get them for $350 or so plus another $250 or so for the adapters & installation. The main reason for getting the unit was for my wife for the back up camera due to the dark tint on my back window. She never drives the car and overall I DO NOT recommend it. The camera is useless because it takes the system so long to boot up. The AM radio reception is all but non existent, even after using all the tricks listed on the audio forum, and the touch screen buttons are rather unresponsive. The main volume **** is a joke.
On the good side, having a 4 GB memory stick is nice, the navigation system is cool and can be modified (not easily), and the blue tooth phone works.
I don't know how much the Chevy nav goes for, but it may work better with the corvette antenna system.
