Default Do I really NEED these for a cam swap?

If I get a new cam, is it really necessary to get new Retainers, Pushrods or Valve Stem Seals?

I'm contemplating on whether or not I should just buy the cam and the new valve springs (that are required) or just the whole cam package that will come with all of the above.

Price for the package is ~$720

Price for just the cam: $384
Price for the vavle springs (that come with retainers, machined locks, spring baes, and seals) is $255
So that total is $639

But if I get JUST the springs it's $8 each making it $128 (8 * 16)

So that total is only $512

So out of your experience, what should I get along with the cam?

Thanks in advance

I would get the package that comes with all the stuff. I know it doesnt seem like you need it but you will. The stock springs will be destroyed at a rapid pace on an aftermarket cam profile and its always nice to have a little security with hardened pushrods. The retainers are necessary to keep the springs from pushing into the heads.

what size cam? if its a baby cam with only like 220 duration and nothing over .570 on lift. you could get away with just swaping out the cam.. but to understand what kind of damage will happen when you drop a valve from a broken valve spring, and you end up tearing down the motor and replacing pistons, timing chain, ect..

what are you gonna do about tuning?

I was looking at the Thunder Racing Cam Swap Package; LS2 CheaTR (99-TR-CHEATRLS2-CAM)

http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...cid=122&sid=88

Cam Package is the second item, part# CAMPK-PG
- Your Choice of Thunder Racing Camshaft
- Dual Patriot Gold Valvesprings and Ti Retainers
- Thunder Racing Pushrods (7.400)
- Valve Stem Seals
- Additional spring options available below

The cheatr part# is 99-TR-CHEATRLS2-CAM
"LS2 CheaTR" - 215/230 .629/.592 117 LSA.
Off Idle-6800 RPM Power Band.
Broad power range.
Works well with stock exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters.
Stock like idle. Minor tuning required on automatic transmission cars. R
esponds very well to nitrous.
Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.
Comp 921 Valve Springs are highly recommended.

Although they recommended the 921, I emailed them and said the Patriot Golds would be even better.
Another forum member recommended the PGs as well.
