i was cleaning my air filter this weekend and decided to take a look inside my throttle body while in the neighborhood. all around the inner perimeter (right by the butterfly) was crap i would describe as gasoline that was now black and somewhat tar like.
not knowing how best to clean but not wanting to leave it there, i simply took a rag and wiped it all off as best i could. the car is actually idling a little better now. is this the best way to clean this or is there a spray product that works well and gets it really clean?
Do you have a catch can installed? If not, that is probably oil residue. Next time pull the TB all the way off. Its easy and you can clean both sides and check the interior of the intake manifold..

that is probably the best way to go. a little gas on a clean rag. i will remove it next time. i do not know what a catch can is (although i can imagine) so i do not have one but i will check into it.
I'm a little curious about this: I was cleaning my air filter this weekend and decided to take a look inside my throttle body while in the neighborhood. all around the inner perimeter (right by the butterfly) was crap i would describe as gasoline that was now black and somewhat tar like.
What are you using for an air clearer that is "cleanable?" And what was the substance you cleaned since it surely wasn't "gasoline" because gasoline never enters the throttle body?

i just meant i was cleaning my K&N filter and from what i see from these posts, that black tar i was cleaning and referring to as gas was oil.. now how to keep it out of there. i have read tons of posts on oil cathers and am no closer to making any decisions. a simple issue but confusing to me.
TB cleaner; cheap and easy. If you spray alot it will cause the car to hesitate and next start up. No biggie just making u aware.
"cheap and easy" sounds good to me i will give it a try next time. i guess i got in the habbit of staying away from that stuff. the last car i modded was a 96 cobra and they used to say not to use TB cleaner on it cos it had some sort of protectant on the TB and that the cleaner would remove that protectant or something like that. anyway.
tks, dal
