Default Trailer Wiring Question

For those of you who have installed trailer hitches, can the trailer wiring just be spliced into the existing wiring or must one use some type of electronic adapter?

It doesn't require any adapters, unless maybe you have some fancy LED lights.

Take a look at this website and scroll down to about 4th link from the bottom for a great DIY guide:

Spliced in on my '05, no problem, took about 10 minutes. Drop the taillight lenses and you have access to all the wiring.

Very easy. Here's a vid of how to do it.

Now if anyone has a cool way of keeping the connector from falling back into the rear fascia cavity when not in use I'm all ears!

I used black wire ties onto the hitch frame.

Thanks for all the responses. The info was excellent. I knew how to wire a trailer but had heard that some recent production cars will have the electrical system blown by the extra load of trailer lights without using a special adapter. I did not know if the Vette fell into that category. Obviously it does not, which is great news. Once again, thanks to all the respondents.

According to the companies that sell the wiring harness you "should" buy one of their relay boxes to make sure there is no problem.

An installer I know at UHaul said he wires them direct unless the customer is a jerk, if they are they pay for the relay and the additional labor charge.

Yes, you have to drill holes. In both sides of the frame and in the bumper bar and you have to enlarge existing frame holes in order to install the carriage bolt plates.

The instructions that came with the hitch were very easy to follow. I installed my own hitch in a few hours.
