Default PLEASE HELP! WEIRD "ClANK" SOUND....?

Hey everyone...

I got new rims on a week or two ago. I only drive my car on weekends and went out for a spin this weekend.. I had the top off the coupe, and heard a REALLY LOUD "clank" noise as i start to drive off...

It ONLY happens when going slow... and it literally sounds like two pieces of steel hitting each other. I visually inspected and could not see anything glaringly obvious.. A buddy who is a mechanic said that maybe the lugs were not torqued on the new rims, causing that sound... I had the lugs torqued and the sound is still there...

While driving, the car feels perfectly fine... no rattle, no vibration, nothing! After tightening the lugs, and the sound continued and he (my buddy the mechanic) stated that it sounded like it might be the axle or possibly something with the driveshaft...? Not sure!

its a 2005 C6 with 47,000... ZERO issues so far (until this)... LOVE my car, but i have no warranty at the moment! A family member bought me an extended warranty, but its still within the "1 month and 1,000 miles" no cover period.. If i take it to the dealership the guy told me that there will be "record" of it and it may not be in my best interest b/c the warranty company can/likely will use this as an excuse to not cover future problems...

I can still cancel my warranty plan, but since a family member got it, i have to be delicate... Regardless, that is the least of my concerns. I will be happy to come out of pocket for the fix, i just need to figure out what it is..

Anyone else have something similar happen to their 05 6mt...?

If the only recent mod has been swap of the wheels, you might try jacking each corner & spinning the wheel to see if there's any interference with a brake caliper, although that would give you a constand noise rather than a one time "clank" as you describe. You could also pull each wheel to make sure as noted by previously that you don't have a busted linkage either front or back.

I don't know if the symptoms match your case but justed posted the "clank noise from rear" situation in my case at the link below.

Very funny.....i also have the same clank and just posted a thread about it recently. (only when starting/rolling while turning the steering far right/left. I also want to take my car to the dealer but am within the 30 days before the extended warrany kicks in. I didnt know about the 1000 mile part though. You sure about that? Please let me know what you come up with if you solve your problem.

Best of luck with your vette!

GOT IT!!!! LOL it was the tire pressure sensor inside the tire, clanking around between the rim and tire! Apparently it broke off just after the sensor so it was still reading pressure, meanwhile the hard-plastic peace was flopping around in wheel!

WHHEEEWW!!! Glad is wasnt anything big!

be nice to know if its front or rear? front it gonna be a shock missing the hold down rubber washers or control bushings or loose. Rears gonna be all those things plus rear end, axle shaft or sway bar bushing or end link. off the top of my head there. This is assuming no wheel issues like its rubbing or a lug loose.
