Doh! Figures I'd be out of warranty. Was coming home last night about 2:00 AM, about 70-75 mph down the interstate, when all of a sudden the RPM's shot way up to 3,000. I was still cruising but something was definitely wrong - as I slowed down (deliberately) I was able to maintain whatever speed I had slowed to but couldn't accelerate any faster.
So I make my way to the shoulder and I'm starting to smell hot transmission fluid... it's getting slower and slower and finally (D) was the same as neutral. I get out of the car and there is partially-vaporized transmission fluid all over the car. Basically from the front fender vents back - the doors and the entire rear bumper were covered with it. Took an hour for AAA to get to the scene, but we got it home and I immediately gave it a a bath to get that tranny fluid off before it eats into the paint (this was about 3:30 AM now).
I'm out of warranty, so I'm not expecting to get off cheap here but anyone wanna take a guess at what happened before it goes to the dealer on Monday? There was no vibration, it seemed to be basically running fine and just not going into gear. At one point when I had stopped I shut it off and started it back up I put it in drive and started moving forward VERY slowly (way too slow comparable to how much gas I was giving it) and right when I hit about 2,000 RPM's it kicked out of gear and was like being in neutral again. This was repeatable for a little while but once I noticed I was losing transmission fluid I shut it off and stopped messing with it.
Got it back today, was just the line that came loose - I guess it just attaches with normal hose clamps. Whew, thought it was going to be expensive - no charge even though I'm out of warranty, and they degreased the whole under-carriage and fixed a rattle in the driver side door panel while it was there. Now that's service!
