Default Does everyone else's stock C6 break tires loose and get sideways?

I have an 09 A6 with weak 2.56 gears and the upgraded supercars tires. The 1-2 shift is pretty violent in competitive mode or all nannies off, definitely gets sideways. A lot better with traction control on or with active handling in aggressive mode. But I feel these modes are limiting the engine, doesn't seem to rev as hard. Are the supercars tires that bad? I can't imagine flooring it with the stock goodyear tires. Will upgrading to something like Michelin PS2's correct the slipperiness between gear changes, or do you have to something like RRR's or drag radials? Right now I can't launch the car from a stop for the life of me.

Default Yup.............

Stock 2006 Z-51 6spd w/PS2's here...

More than 1/2 throttle in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd w/ traction control ON breaks 'em loose, full throttle kicks the tail out 'til the traction control cuts in and I can feel the engine hesitate! Only answer I know of is to feather the throttle in lower gears, or turn the traction control off and be VERY careful. Don't think I even wanna go to the second level of turning off the stability control.....

if your car has been tuned and Tourque Management has been deleted than it is very easy to break emn loose.

my 08 w/ 2.56 will break sticky tires loose on the 1-2 shif in either auto or paddle mode if I give it enough gas.

On the street I always leave the nannies on and have no problem getting plenty of wheel spin in 1st and second, especially in the cooler weather.

My stock 08 A6 with "weak" 2.56 gears ran 12.12 and 12.13 at almost 118 mph last week at Beech Bend. See my post in the 1/4 mile performance stickey thread.....

beav626, mine's bone stock, no tune even.

tuxnharley, so the PS2's didn't help traction in between shifts?

How are you guys launching at the dragstrip? Off idle (500 rpm), or do you bring up the revs? Do you need to basically feather it out of the hole and not fully floor it until 2nd gear or something? I took one pass at the dragstrip at around 1,000 rpm and cut a 2.0 60 foot but had to back off cause it start fishtailing on the 1-2 shift. And this was with active handling still on (just one press of the button).

Depending on track conditions, at idle or slightly above... Go to the last post on this thread to check out my runs from last weekend... post #4282 My best 60 ft has been 1.92

Wow, you seem to be a great driver. So you just leave at 500-600 rpm, do you punch it or ease into it? If you ease into it, at how many feet would you say it takes until you are fully floored? I can't believe you can keep the car straight with all nannies off!

nope, mine don't break loose. I never drive over the posted speed limit either. That would be the sign of an unsafe driver.

you believe that?

I usually don't really power brake, I just take the slack out of the drive train. Maybe 200 rpm above idle, If the track is biting real good I'll bring it up to 1,100 -1,200..Then a dead mash to the floor...

On days when the track is well prepped I have no or no noticable wheel spin. There have been a few times I have had to get off the gas...

I think the stock supercars really do suck that much.

I can feel them slip sometimes even in 2nd gear.

I have a stick so I can't say anything about any problems you're having with your auto, but getting rid of the supercraps is something you won't regret.

I think traction is a huge issue with these cars, and honestly I can't understand how anyone is getting 60' times under 2.0 with street tires. It just seems to be an issue where people's experiences vary alot. Alot of it is probably surface dependant... I know on some streets I can floor it in first and the car takes off, while on others I floor it and get nothing but spin

I'm surprised your having that much trouble with an auto though. The autos I see at the strip seem to get about 2.05 60' and have no spin problems off the line, I'm even more surprised your are breaking loose with an auto at the shift.

My 07 Z51 is manual, and it is ridiculously hard to get traction with even a slightly aggressive launch... the best I can do is a 2.10 60' just driving away off idle. On the other hand I don't usually have major traction loss at the shifts...

One thing to consider is that tires can "harden" and lose their grip due to age, exposure to cold, too many "heat cycles"... so two tires of the same brand with different histories might not even provide the same grip. I recently switched to non runflats, but have not been to the track yet... though street traction is improved.

You can not drive around with 30 PSI in the rear tires in cold temps as the tires get warm the pressure increases. Depending upon how cold it is you can drop the pressure as low as 24 and wait until they warm up before you attempt to launch the car. Make sure the tires as well as the oil have reached operating temp.

Cold runflats on cold pavement = no traction

If you are running at the track see both Dennis (pettvette & dennis 50nj) posts

A whole lot more depends on surface conditions than on the tires.

Listen to the 1-2 shift on this video. I'm an A6 in the far lane (Z06 near lane) both of us with MT DR's. No problem on the launch, but the track prep stops before the 1-2 shift and the conditions change. The data log indicated tire spin for .862 seconds, which means for an average 56 mph it spun while traveling 71 feet. From previous runs that night I expected this and drove through it.

Due to my quicker reaction time (.003) I reached the finish first even though his ET was quicker.

The Supercar tires are a summer tire, thus they have no traction in cold weather. When the temps drop into the 50's, I have poor traction with my Z06, 40's and they're dangerous, 30's and I shouldn't be driving. As soon as these tires are worn a little more, I'm going with the Michelin run flats.
