I have a 2005 Z51 6 Speed with approx 70k on the clock.
Problem: When shifting between gears it doesn't feel smooth id say 75% of the time. Feels almost like its catching something between gears but its not grinding. I have no problems grabbing and 1 to 4 shifts smoothly.
Failed Solutions: I tried the ranger method multiple times with no avail.
MISC info: About a year and half ago my clutch wasn't returning all the way to "normal" position and turned out to be the Master Cylinder (I believe) and was replaced. I have an extended warranty that will cover everything except wear parts till 95k, so I kinda wanna prepare myself if I have to dish out the bill for a clutch before going to the dealer with the problem.
if the clutch is trully dissengaging all the way then it sounds like a synchonizer that could be a little ruff (each gear has aits own syncronizer except reverse) It just helps the gear as it goes in. Usually they get only get damaged when there is a nissue like you had where the clutch wont dissengage all the way (when you push it down).
Usually not all gears get damaged tho so if its like just a few gears then that might be the culprit
Sounds to be an internal trans problem. Did it just get harder to shift all of the sudden or has it always been like that? Stock shifter or aftermarket? Some aftermarket shifters have a more positive feel to them than others.
HANNY and HorsePowerAddicts, Thanks for the quick reply.
When shifting between 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th is nice and smooth all the time. I bought the car used but as far as I know everything with the shifter is stock.
I honestly can't remember when this started happening(at least 3 months), but slowly it has gotten to the point where I don't feel comfortable getting on it. There will be times (all random times and temps) when everything feels great but it's usually short lived.
Do they have to take apart the transmission to adjust or replace the synchronizers?
Yes the trans has to be pulled apart to put in new synchronizers. If you end up having to pay for the synchronizers then there are some other upgrade parts that would be best to replace while everything apart.
So, It sounds like it may be the clutch but most likely something else within the transmission. Since I have the extended warranty what upgrades do you suggest they replace while they are in there?
I was also thinking about getting a new MGW shifter. Should I perhaps do this before taking it in? I have heard some people say there shifting has been improved.
The MGW is great and will make shifting feel better, but it wouldn't have anything to do with this problem....it doesn't really matter whether you do it along with this repair or not.
I want to thank everyone for there input and insight.
After the new year I'm just going to take it in and prepare for the worst (hope for the best). I have been setting aside some cash for a nice set of headers and a tune but this is more important.
I looked over my extended warranty and it really does cover most everything except the clutch. There's only one way to find out what it is and I'll keep y'all posted..
