even though it is stated to be "stock" it might have an aftermarket shifter that does have springs that adjust the side movement. my breathless performance does, and others do too....perhaps that is the issue.

when i was trying out the springs in mine, seems like the lighter spring did not hold 1st and when you thought you shifted to 1st it was in 3rd like you are experiencing. It takes about 45 min to take the console off to determine which shifter you have. if you decided to try that do a search for console removal and there are excellent directions on the forum.

My shifter with 30K miles on it was pretty loose. Here's a vid of the shaft coming out of the shifter box, where I shake the shifter left and right, then forwards and back.

Understood, Pull the shifter to your left and go forward with it. That is waht I do but I don't always get the desired result. 1st or 3rd, you pick em...It's about a fifty-fifty shot as to which one you get. After tons of research, I'm thinking that is is probably the alignment procedure using the alignment pin. Won't know until I get the console removed and check it. I'm out of town until Tuesday so wait it must.

The best, by far, way to eliminate the "skip shift" is by the "blown LED fuse" method. No wiring harness system is better, or easier. Do a search on it, please, and see how easy and effective it is!

I bought a new 2008 shifter/shifter box assembly from gmpartsdirect (GM part # 25823572, $117.51), plus the shifter **** (GM # 15851631 $57.19), and the **** bolt (GM part # 11609670 $2.52).

No slop, no rattle, works great!!

The shifter box is where the slop is, replacing the shifter won't get rid of the slop in the box. (he he, he said slop in the box - Beavis).

Thanks for the followup....

Now that I have returned from Christmas vacation, I have had a chance to actually drive the car in town a bit. I took me a few minutes, but I have figured out the following:

If I push in the clutch and shift into neutral, let out the clutch and come to a stop. I can then go into 1st gear 95% of the time after I push the clutch back in of course. You can actually feel it go into a different gate it seems. As far as the 1-4 skip shift, It's actually pretty easy to live with if you just avoid shifting while the light is on. Somehow, it just not feel normal going from 1st to 4th! Who came up with that bright idea anyway? Reminds me of the Cadillac 8-6-4 thing, remember that?

Does this sound pretty normal? I'll pull the console and check shifter adjustment before I take it to someone. Seems easy enough...

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Tracy

Hmmmm....... I have a few ideas, maybe.

1. Skip-shift activation or malfunction/sticking of the solenoid. While I have never seen this happen, I wonder if it could block you from the 1-2 gate.

2. Wear or play in the shifter box area. Maybe something is shifting around and causing inconsistent engagement of gears.

3. car has aftermarket shifter that makes it harder to determine proper gear. I just put in an MGW shifter and it does take more effort to engage gears. The pattern is also very close and tight now, which I could see making it harder to tell the difference between 1st and 3rd gears. I actually went into 3rd once from a stop when first driving the car with the new shifter. Just need to get used to it.

I'd like to hear what the fix ends up being.
