I was wondering can just the rear gears be changed? On the Chuck Cow advertisements it looks like he changes out the whole rear end. In an effort to save money why not swap gears only? how would you get the speedo right after the gear swap?

You can't build this diff. It is unlike any rear end you've built before.
Tools and parts are a trick to get and the procedure is NO COST EFFECTIVE for someone looking to save money.
You'll save the most money just driving up and having it done for you while you wait.
Also, the gears aren't worth much without the right tune.

When he say's "You'll save the most money just driving up and having it done for you while you wait."
He isn't pulling your chain. The first rate work is done fast and at a big cost saving's also.
Did I ever tell you about how I LOVE a well tuned ride ?

Unitrax in Anaheim, CA will do a gear swap on your differential and it's considerably cheaper that way.
I tried to replace the ring and pinion but could not find parts that would fit an A6 housing. Ended up putting in one of Chucks 3:42 assemblies and love it!
From what I've read, stall converters are hard on the tranny... seems like most would prefer gears instead.
The biggest hardships for a tranny come from a heavy right foot.
I have 57K on my '08 and over half of that is highway miles. My 2.56 gear allows me more engine life than 3.42s or whatever. I still get the same mpg too.
This is what works for me. Your needs and results may vary.
