Default MGW Shifter questions

OK, I am on the last step of installing my MGW shifter (installing the shifter handle). I have a Hurst shifter ball that I have had on the car for a year and want to install it on the MGW shifter. I tried calling George @ MGW, but they are closed for the holiday until 1/5/2010. The ball is very tight. I put a little grease on the shifter and can get the ball on the shaft, but as I am pushing down the ball I noticed the black bushing is also strectching and to the point that it may cover one of the two holes drilled into the shaft. Is this normal and should I continue to keep pushing the ball onto the shaft? PS: The factory **** slides over the shaft just fine.

i just installed my mgw and put on a ball shifter similar to the Hurst ball. i got the ball from Nakid Parts. It fit very tight and some of the material did get in front of the set screw hole. we used a small sharp edged tool to get the material out. i was also curious about whether it was really supposed to fit that tight, but figured if it was that difficult to get on, then their shouldnt be any rattling from it.

needless to say, i have a rattle, and will probably take the console off again to take off the ball and drive without it and see if the rattle if from the ball or something else.

let me know what you find out, and if you have any rattles after you test it.

good luck

I had the exact same problem. I just kept twisting and pushing until the holes aligned. Also, I had trouble pushing the boot down far enough to easily get the screw in. I forced it and even bent the chrome ring just a little. And the supplied O rings... one is too thin and the other is too thick. I used the thin one but and have a slight rattle between the ring and the ball sometime.

my 2006 does not have the chrome ring, so i didnt run into the problems with the ring, or a rattle between the rin and the ball.

I don't have the chrome ring to worry about as mine is a 2006. Since my car is parked for the winter here in the Chicagoland area, I won't know if it rattles or not until spring. I would assume that by seeing how tight the ball sits on the shaft, if this shifter rattles, it wont be coming from that part of the shifter. I am going to wait until next week and call George @ MGW to get his opinion. I never had any issues with my stock shifter, so I hope I didn't create one when I installed the MGW.

The ball does not rattle. It's only at certain rpm's in 2nd and 3rd when a vibration cause the ring to rattle against the ball. I think another "O" ring stretched over the ball and allowed to settle in between the ring and ball will cure the problem, that is if you can call it a problem.
It took me a while to get used to the short throw, especially 1st to 2nd when the tranny is still cold. But, I like it.
