Basic Supercharger Questions
1. If its that inexpensive to add performance, why isn't this an available OEM option? (Yes, I know about the ZR1 but it's more than twice as expensive as a base C6) My suspicion is that adding this much HP puts strain on components that weren't engineered to withstand it. If this is true, then is it really OK to just add a SC and not upgrade other components?
2. How does adding a SC affect the reliability/longevity of the engine and other components?
I would love to SC my Vette and gain the additional power but am concerted about the consequences and how it wold affect every-day driveability.
If these issues have been discussed before, perhaps someone could point me to the relevant link(s).
Thanks.
First you'll need to think about upgrading your exhaust. Then comes the effect on your trans & diff. Then the stress it WILL put on your stock internals. Then you'll need to figure out how to get traction, OH, and the clutch, can't forget about that, the list goes on, thus the extra cost between an 8k blower and that of a ZR1.
It's not that you can't put an A&A kit on your stock car and get a safe tune. There are quite a few guys with tens of thousands of miles on their boosted stock internals, but it is only a matter of time before something breaks. Even the best builders out there have things go wrong eventually.
If going fast is what you want, do it the right way. Set HP goals, set aside funds to upgrade components as you go along, and replace parts BEFORE they break, that way you can recover some of the $ spent on upgrades.
Find yourself a reputable manufacturer, I suggest Andy @ A&A Corvette, talk with them in length about what you want, and what it's going to take to "do it right", and you'll be just fine! These kinds of upgrades are not for the faint of heart, or the light of wallet.
Now hurry up so you can join the rest of us in the Forced Induction section!

As far as driveability it isn't really any different. Just a lot more power when you want it.
I had a C5 that I used as a DD and put over 140K miles on. I don't use my C6 as a daily driver; mostly, it's slated for weekend/good weather use. That being said, I wouldn't want to do anything to preclude it from being a DD or diminish the longevity of the engine. Unless the (upcoming?) C7 contains some serious performance upgrades, I will probably keep this car for a long time...
All that being said, my only real "goal" is to enjoy the rush of a performance vehicle
