Default PCV Question - Please help

I have eliminated the accordian couplers between my cold air intake and throttle body and replaced them with straight couplers. I would like to know if I can cap off the vent tube that comes off the right valve cover and just add a vented oil fill cap. Will this damage the engine?

Yes, you may cap off the vent tube and run a filter/vent on the oil fill tube. My Vette and many others are running this configuration.

Does anyone make those caps with a filter?

It will contribute to global warming. Seriously it's an EPA smog thing. A closed crankcase is the law.

If you google "Chrome Breather Cap" you will find several suppliers for the Oil Breather Cap. I purchased my breather cap (K&N Chrome Breather) from LEEA Customs/NakidParts.com.

Be prepared to fail the visual part of your inspection. It's a Federal requirement to recycle crankcase vapors.

A high performance engine such as ours should be exempt from such things...would you want to breathe in those hot crankcase vapors?

Nothing personal, just my opinion

Sounds like it's time to do a little R&D

Tracy Lewis of Revxtreme has done all the work for you!

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...cv-system.html

And Tracy has the best customer service ever. I ordered a red pcv catch can, and they were on backorder from the powdercoater. Took a few weeks to come in.....and Tracy didn't like that delay so he sent me the unit for free! Wow I about fell out of my chair when I saw it on the porch.

I squared up with Tracy but I have to say he is not only a great guy, he really takes care of his customers.

Anyway he has really solved the 'mystery and misconception' of the pcv system in that thread and has produced a top shelf product.

Many of us use either the oil filler vent you mentioned or an oil catch can with an attached filter vent. Enjoy.

First - Thanks to everyone for their input!!

Second - Joe G - I read the posts you sent me. Very interesting. I just installed a catch can myself from CCA. I noticed the instructions they provide have the 2 hose running from the catch can to 2 ports: 1 port coming from the valley cover under the intake manifold and the other port is behind the throttle body. If I read your posts correctly in the link you sent me, it showed that 1 line went to the port in the right valve cover and the other port went to the rear of the intake - I am a little confused.

Before I installed the catch can (this winter while car is stored) I ran a hose to a Greddy catch box with a K&N breather on it. I too have noticed that my oil seems alot dirtier than you would normally expect. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and only use the better AC oil filter.

I also saw that Spin chimed in with his input on the link you posted. Spin, I have always respected your knowledge and really enjoy all of your write ups, so if you ever read this, I would really value your input. I would also like to see any photos of the hose running to the oil fill tube.

So, I guess my new questions are:

Will I damage my engine by just having a filtered breather in my oil fill tube?

Should I just run a hose from the right valve cover port to the oil fill tube?

Do I have my catch can hoses installed to the correct ports?

Thanks again for everyone's input, and I look foward to hearing from anyone and everyone about this subject!

I went back to a catch can setup in the line from the valley cover to the intake. I run the pcv clean air intake to the factory accordion, if you have a smooth coupler you can get a threaded barb from home depot and locktite a nut on the back.

I've had my intake off with this setup and virtually no oil was in there, and, my oil is back to staying clean.

Thanks Joe G. Did you ever run the filter on top of the oil fill tube?

Essentially, yes. I had a catch can with a filter on top, and I ran both the valley line and the valve cover line to it, and capped the intake ports before and after the TB.

My oil got so dirty so fast with this setup I didn't like it, so I went to a standard catch can in the valley line. Now my oil stays clean like normal since combustion byproducts are being sucked out of the crankcase.
