everyone tells me i will need a tune??? i am not looking for max hp, just good drivability and good sound.

Do you have to have a tune? Answer is absolutely not. I ran a cold air inlet and long tube headers without a tune and I still picked up 26 rwhp and 39 rwtq. However, you may get codes (check engine light) because of the rear O2 sensors. A tune will turn off these codes and will get the last bit of hp from your setup. You can do the tune yourself, but you'd have to buy HPtuners ($500) and do a lot of studying on what parameters to change. A tune normally adjusts the fuel mixture and sets timing to optimum levels. It can also change the parameters that tell the computer to pull timing for such things as torque management, high inlet air temps, or high water temps. So a tune will not only allow you to get more peak horsepower, it also makes the engine more consistent. However, most tunes cost anywhere from $300 to $700.

Good luck.

New headers are expensive, 1000'ish even with out cats look for a good used set here on the forum or maybe ebay. There is a vendor here that offers a set for 600 I think? CAI runs 250 to 350. You should get the tune to make sure your a/f ratios are right as the mods will change them. Chuck COW, here on the forum does a mail order tune, send him your computer and he will tune it and send it back. It does require a 160 Tstat and you will get a lot of opinions on that if you search the forum for 160 tstat, lol. The computer tune and tstat will set you back about 250 to 300 with shipping. Figure 1500 to 1600 if you install the headers and CAI yourself. You will like the results as this should put you in the 385+ rwhp range. Have fun and enjoy the car!

No cats will trigger a CEL. The only way to stop the CEL is a tune.

You can tune it yourself pretty easily with a Diablo Predator handheld tuner. You need model #7191 and you can usely pick up a used and UNLOCKED (not married to the old vehicle) one for around $225 if you want to do it yourself and be able to revert to stock settings at a moments notice by yourself. They will even mail you a custom tune for another $85. MonteSS is a forum member and does it.

Hard to beat LG Motorsports Street Series longtubes and offroad x pipe. Like 1095 bucks compared to 1700 bucks of most others. Yea you would probably gain 5 or so hp by going with a 1 7/8th primary, but if your after value on a budget, they are hard to beat. I do agree though, if your going to run no cats, you need a tune if for nothing else to get rid of the check engine light. As far as the cold air, check in the forsale and find a deal on a used one.

TSP headers, Airaid and a mailorder tune

TSP's and Airaid helped me get 485rwhp out of my LS3 on a load bearing dyno here in hot *** South FL. Cheap and potent.
