Default Advice On Drone/Hum at 70mph

I resently test drove a C6 with headers and a Borla Exhaust. The car ran great but at 70mph and in 6th gear the exhaust was loud. There was a defenite drone/hum. I was wondering if there is a way to fix the drone short of replacing the Borla with a stock exhaust. If I put the car into 5th gear the drone went away.

Are they Borla Stingers or Touring, I'm guessing stingers? Stingers are loader than the Touring. They make a noise deadning system that might help. But other than changing the mufflers there is not mcuh else you can do that I know of.

So if I just replace the mufflers the drone would go away? Is that possible.

Ya put stock mufflers on and drone should disappear even with headers. I just went with 4.10 differential and that put me just above the drone zone at 70mph while in 6th.

You think the Borla's drone? Try Flowmasters. They are absolutely horrible. They sound great but the drone on the highway is intolerable. The only thing you can do if you want to keep the exhaust is drive in a lower gear to keep the motor out of that RPM range where it drones. For me 6th gear is useless at anything under 85mph.

The car with the headers and drone was just sold. I missed a great deal too. I've read where some users put on headers and a free flowing exhaust and then have lower times at the track. Is this just poor driving skills or are headers not worth the effort/money?

I had the Borla's on my car.....drone not going anywhere. Headers with stock muffler or NPP would probably do the trick.

How does the exhaust on the Z06 work. I read that there is a switch to open or close the baffles to give the driver the best of both worlds. Is this correct? I guess GM is the only place to buy one? Is it worth it?

I had the same problem with Billy Boats (BandB) crap. Their solution ? To put their baffles in ... at additional expense of course and to restrict the exhaust flow. My solution ? Went back to stock and was out $500 just so i could enjoy a long trip going 70 mph without a headache developing and to obtain maximum economy in 6th gear. Some of these aftermarket manufacturers have a real nerve putting their deficient product out there -- they are only out for one thing obviously : quick money and to h___ with the Consumer.

I had a 96 that I bought new wayyyyy back then... I drag race so the first thing I did was put on headers, and (I forget the brand) and Flowmaster mufflers... Now for me its a 100 mile drive ONE WAY to the track, the drone was so bad, I bought another brand of after market muffler... same results (Drone)... finally I got Muffler eliminators for the C4.. basically its just a straight pipe "No Muffle at all" the only muffler I had was the resonater...

It about drove me nuts, I eventually went back to the STOCK OEM muffler... the car was only .15 slower in the 1/4 but I could listen to the radio, and have a conversation with any passenger in my car..

Fast forward to now I have a C6 also Automatic, and I still drag race, I have done some mods , (Converter, Headers, CAI, 160 T Stat... but the STOCK MUFFLERS are still on it, and I'll never change to any after market muffler unless its a TRACK ONLY car... I must be getting real "OLD" as I enjoy taking a long ride, and enjoy listening to more than just a loud exhaust!!

I like the rumble when launching a car but not for long rides. It can be tedious. Would u do the headers again on your C6?

The headers are not bad at all as long as you keep the STOCK mufflers....its the Mufflers that cause the drone..that I cant stand!

At 70 mph I ride in 5th gear with my catless longtubes and borla stingers...it sounds great (you get the exhaust tone, not drone in 5th gear). 6th gear at 70 is pretty terrible though.
