Default Headers/Drone update!!!

As some of you read, I had recently installed a set of long tube headers. The headers came from a dist. on ebay. I've reviewed the headers so I won't go over that again. If you remember, the problem that I was having was the drone that the combination of the headers and the aftermarket B&B Route 66 exhaust was producing. The DRONE was SEVERE.... The headers, exhaust and A4 really produced the drone at/between 1400-1800 rpm. The drone was so bad that it was making it impossible to talk on the phone in the car or your passenger.

I didn't want to pay another 1500-2000 for another exhaust so I started looking for some zo6 mufflers. I found a set of mufflers from a member on this site. He had already had his base c6 over-axle pipes welded on the mufflers so they were pretty much ready to go. The mufflers were in GREAT condition and looked to be almost new. I opted for the "NPP in a Box". The install of both the exhaust and the NPP in a Box was completed last night and the testing of the system was done today.

The Zo6 exhaust is as loud as the Route 66 cans but they produce tones at a much higher frequency. It's more race-car-ish than muscle car-ish. That of course, is with the butterflies open.

The NPP in a Box kit is extremely complete and seems to be very well made. The kit comes packaged with everything you need. The kit says it takes 30 minutes to install... well me.... about an hour and a half. I have a thick tunnel plate and trying to run the vac line on top of it was a real pain in the but. Also, the hose holes in the passenger side rear storage area was somewhat incorrect compared to the picture. But it's easily worked out and the rest of the install was fantastic to say the least. The electrical hookup was first rate and just about as good as it gets.

With the NPP in a Box engaged and the butterflies shut the new exhaust is EXTREMELY quite comparatively. The car now sounds stock and is MUCH more comfortable to drive. On the freeway the car is almost silent. Now I know must of us feel that the road noise that comes through on the highway is loud. But it seems that now the car is quieter than it was stock. Probably just me though...

The NPP in a Box works exactly as advertised and I now have the best of both worlds. The only thing that would be better is to have the butterflies close automatically based on RPM like a stock Zo6.

for those of you that are thinking about doing headers and exhaust... the zo6 exhaust is a great option. You will have to worry about the over the axle pipes fitting, but it was already done for me

In the end, the DRONE is COMPLETELY GONE! The car is now much more comfortable and much more satisfying to drive. Also have the option to get nasty!

Hope some of this helps.

Interesting info. I've yet to purchase a set of headers because after Jet-Hot coating (which IMO is an absolute requirement) I'm on the fence of whether getting the LG's or the AR's which are basically identical. I've read too many posts on how there are problems with other manufacturer's. But when it comes to drone, it seems there is no escape except to change the rear end to a different gear ratio such as 3.15 or something else (which is changing the RPM at the cruising speed).....yes, more money. So, until I see or hear otherwise, I need to save a ton of money before all this s--t happens, for me anyway.

By the way, I have the Corsa Sports.

I run DynaTech's 1 7/8" coated headers on my C6, originally thru the stock exhaust. Then I changed over to the FlowMaster's dual tips, and the drone was terrible. It only took a 30 minute ride for me to put the car back on the lift and remove them. The vendor did take them back. Then, I installed the Corsa Sport with dual tips. That was about 2 1/2 years ago. Originally the car was quite unless I went past half throttle, then it really began to sing. There was no drone, and at cruising speeds it was only slightly different from stock. But, now that the system has some time and miles on it, I am beginning to hear some drone. Not terribly bad, but, it's there. And, inasmuch as the mufflers are 100% stainless with no packing, I can't understand why it's happening?

I agree the only way to enjoy LT headers on a A6 is with NPP and M2W. I have them on my '08 Vert and it's the best of both worlds.

For people thinking of adding headers I strongly recommend just buying the B&B fusion exhaust I have have had many complements of how great they sound. Its all set up for you, sounds great and looks very nice too. I used my home link buttons on the visor to operate the flapper doors and was able to leave the small remote in my office desk drawer.

I went with the C6 Z06 muffler & "NPP in a Box". There's no drone unless I open the flaps.

Just a question: the Fusions and the NPP in a box---are they all open, all closed? Or, are they partially open at times?

Thanks.

From what I've read (and heard) it's either open or closed. I don't think there are any partially open kits out there.

I have an 07 coupe with a complete ZO6 3" exhaust system and an NPP in a box. With the butterflies open there's a drone between 1,400 and 2,000 RPM. Closed, absolutely no noise! It's the way to go!
