I was looking at my friend's LS3 and it looks like the air intake is a lot wider necked and generally less sucky looking than my LS2 model. Is there any truth to this, any perf increase from upgrading the LS2 air intake to LS3 version? I can't see spending $$ to get a CAI when putting the money towards headers seems like a better deal, but the LS3 air intake is only $25.

they are always gaining ground from an engeneering point but if you want an improvement i would wait and get a true cold air system or do the free cold air upgrade on your current shroud
MAF is different on LS3, (Card style)..The is a nice square hole on the drivers side 1/2" high x 2" long...But yes, you are correct..Jim Hall called the LS2 air intake one of the worst engineered air intakes he had seen. His CAI would out flow the stock one without any filters in it..
