Default After airbag

I'm buying a c6 project car that both airbags blew. What all is involved with replacing them and getting the car on the road?
Sensors in the bumper for sure right, but what about a reflash, or anything else? The seatbelts won't be locked up or anything will they?

I don't have the car here yet, but would like to start ordering parts.

Hopefully someone with the service manual can provide the official steps. I believe it is recommended to replace the seat belts as well, but I guess it depends on how severe of an impact occured. You will probably need to reset the airbag control module so that it will work going forward (assuming it can be reset with a scanner). Good Luck with the repair.

Like corvettedoug says - the seat belts will probably need to be replaced.

More specifically, the seat belt pre-tensioners.

I bought some C6 seats to put into my 2006 Z06 to get full power on the passenger side, as well as the adjustable lumbar support and side bolsters for each side.

They came out of an accident car and I was told that it was just minor with no airbag deployment.

I put my Z06 seat skins on the C6 seats, ran a power wire for the power passenger seat, and everything seemed to work well except I had an airbag light.

I had noticed when I buckled in that the seat belt buckle receptacle was farther down than on my original seats. I finally pulled the driver's seat back out and took a look at my original seats compared to the C6 seats. It was obvious that the C6 seat belt pre-tensioners had fired and retracted the receptacle.

Here are pictures of the seat belt pre-tensioner device. The one on the left is good, and the one on the right has been activated. That corrugated plastic piece is over a cable. On the device on the right, the corrugated plastic is deformed because the cable inside has been shortened when it activated and pulled the cable down about 2 inches to cinch up the seat belt across the lap during a crash.

I swapped the pre-tensioners from my original Z06 seats to the C6 seats, and no airbag light.

So.....you'll probably need to replace the seat belt pre-tensioners.

My 2006 Service Manual says that after an accident with airbag deployment the following components need replacement:
  • Inflatable restraint I/P module, if deployed and after performing the necessary inspections
  • Inflatable restraint steering wheel module
  • Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM)
  • Inflatable restraint front end sensors
  • Inflatable restraint side impact modules, front seat airbags, if deployed
  • Inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioners
Additionally, regarding the impact sensors, it says to:
  • Replace the sensor whether or not the air bags have deployed
  • Replace the sensor even if it appears to be undamaged

The SDM is located in the center console behind the radio.

Does the project car have side airbags in the seats?

Did they deploy?

If you need side airbags, I have the ones from my original seats. They are left over after I did the seat swap on my Z06 and they're in perfect condition. Let me know if you need side airbags and we can do a deal!!!

no the side airbags didn"t deploy. the car hit a pole and damaged the bumper cover, the hood and deployed both driver and passenger airbags.
the rad didn't even get dented.....

but if all the modules and the seat belt pretensioners need to be replaced I might not complete the deal. hmmmm
