Default Using Diagnostic Scanner, Car on or off?

I recently picked up a Actron CP9180 dig scanner. I was curious on how you "turn the key on" but not the engine since ours are push button? It states in the scanner manual that the car needs to be on but engine off. So do I turn on the ACC mode or whats the process with my 06 A6?

Pretty sure to just press the ACC button to power it up with the motor off.

On a manual, if you shift to neutral and leave the clutch pedal out and press the start button, the car will go "on" without starting and without going into acessory mode. I presume there is a similar trick on an automatic - shift to neutral and do not press the brake pedal?

Holding the bottom part of the start button for ten seconds sets it to on without the engine running.
