Why is there a electrical connector on the starter?
To activate the solenoid that locks the gear onto the flywheel/flexplate and then sends power to the electric starter motor when you hit the starter button.
That would be why it has a little red wire to it. Thats what activates the start. Here is a 1996 starter next to a 2005. I have to put the 2005 into my 1996 cause im doing a LSx swap Im tring to see if the electrical connection applies to me. I dont have a start button so is that electrical connection based off that start buttom?

What are you trying to do ?. I made a remote starter switch and all I need to do is hook the switch to a connector I made by the FUSE BOX. It this what you are thinking of doing because the purple wire for the starter solinoid is A B---h to get at.

I have a 1996 corvette, Im putting a LS2 in from a 2005 corvette. I had my wire harness custom made by current performance wireharness. Im hooking everything up and I put my 2005 starter in and noticed that electrical connection. I have no clue why its there. Most cars (older) have posts on the starter. I look at the 2005 and it had a electrical plug in also. I wanted to know if this would effect me starting. My wireharness doesnt have a wire for this. So im guessing I dont need it. I just wanna make sure what its purpose was.

The connection, the small terminal is what energizes the solenoid. The wire comes from A relay in the FUSE BOX under the Hood. You will be using A key switch on the 96 and A starter switch on the 2005. The 2005 will have several conditions that have to be met before the relay will pass current to the solenoid. There is several ways you can go here and I would defer to the Company who provided the Harness Etc. I would need A lot more info to be of help on this one.
All the connector on the 2005 starter is for activating the solenoid like stated before. Gm just switched to a connector instead of a nut with a eyelet over a stud. I would say they did this because of ease of removal and to get a better seal to not get junk in there and cause high resistance. Two things you can do are splice that single wire connector onto your starter solenoid wire, or use a c5 starter and that will bolt up to the ls2 and use the same type of connection as a 95.
