Default 355 mm StopTech for C6 (which in the thread turns to Wilwood)

I am having some heat problems with my breaks when tracking the car. I have DBA4000 rotors, Quantum Motorsport vent ducts, DTC70 pads (have tried PFC01 and Hawk + before) and Motul 600 brake fluid. During last weekend I did Sebring and felt at one point at I was close to boiling temperature again. I have gotten the brake fluid to boil on me twice and did not "prove the point" this time.

I am pretty hard on the brakes but stay away off them as much as I can. No trail braking. I have stabilization and traction systems off.

Is there anything more I can try without upgrading to other calipers/rotors? (What else is there except for being a more professional driver?)

I have positive experience from StopTech from before and is aiming for a 355 mm ST-40 kit in the front only. Does these fit on standard C6 rims (2005 model) without spacers? Is there any other alternative I should consider?

All comments appreciated.

Neither the StopTech 4 piston or 6 piston front caliper will work with the stock C6 rims and I would discount the idea of using any kind of spacer as you would need something in excess of 1/2" which would require replacing the wheel studs at a minimum.

If your looking for a couple of options to consider using either a 1 piece or 2 piece 355mm x 32mm front rotor you might want to consider the following:

Option 1

1. Install the 6 piston Z06 front calipers along with stainless steel brakelines. I would replace the OEM aluminum pistons with the stainlesss steel pistons available from Doug Rippie MS.

You can use your stock C6 rims and you'll need the following components:

1. 8mm or 1/4" hubcentric front wheel spacers.
2. ET (extended thread lug nuts) - you can keep the stock wheel studs.

Option 2

1. Wilwood 14" 2 piece front big brake kit with their 6 piston forged billet aluminum calipers with stainless steel pistons.

Despite all the hoopla; the Wilwoods are genuine race calipers whereas the offerings from StopTech & Brembo GT are in fact street calipers.

This kit will work with your stock C6 wheels and requires the installation of a 1/8" spacer which I believe comes with the kit.

I have the Wilwood stock rotor size kit (13") and it's amazing! The only thing I see not 100% correct with the above is the spacer, but that could vary on style of stock wheel. I have the 5 spoke 2006 wheel and needed a 1/4" spacer that does NOT come with the kit.

I highly recommend this kit to anyone that wants to push the car harder.

Aha - I have to read in on Wilwood. I have two sets of C6 rims so I am not too keen on messing with new rims. A standard fit is worth a lot.

A couple of questions
- Is it difficult to get pads for the Wilwood calipers? Since I have shifted some in the past, I might want to continue testing around. Currently I am quite happy with the Hawk DTC70. I guess I should browse for pads instead of being lazy and ask in this forum. But still, if anyone is having experience of some kind, that is appreciated.
- Has anyone taken the 13" (or preferrably 14") Wilwood to track and "felt" any difference in heat?

Any one else having any good links?

http://www.wilwood.org/ds586.pdf - with the quite interesting pad bedding procedure. Text underlining is done by me, not Wilwood.
"Pump brakes at low speed to assure proper operation. On the race track, or other safe location, make a series of hard stops until some
brake fade is experienced
. Allow brakes to cool while driving at moderate speed to avoid use of the brakes. This process will properly
burnish the brake pads, offering maximum performance."
http://www.wilwood.com/Pdf/Catalogs/BrakePadCatalog.pdf - interesting information about Wilwood pads

I'll be at the track in 2wks so I'll have better experience there but I did hit the N GA mtns after the brake upgrade and it was very different. Its nice to jab the brakes repeatedly over and over and never lose confidence.

Pads are easy to change obviously and looking at the Wilwood site shows a fair amount of options for driving style.

IMHO you'll get better answers in the Autocrossing and Roadracing forum.

I've cooked Motul RBF600 in my other car at the track. It wasn't a good feeling. I would highly recommend Castrol SRF. It isn't cheap, but neither is your car/life.

I will also add that I don't personally recommend tracking cast wheels. You may never have an issue, but if you do it could cost you dearly. I personally use CCWs on my C6.

I also have positive results with Stoptech and Quantum as well.

From my research; the 2008 C6 Gumby wheels only require the 1/8 inch spacer and ther rest of the 5 spoke C6 wheels will require a 1/4 inch spacer.

In any event; you won't have to replace your wheel studs and for added security you can use ET lugs if you have to run the 1/4 inch spacer.

The Wilwood brake pad selection with regard to torque curve is extensive and most if not all Hawk pads will work in a vast majority of the Wilwood calipers.

If you're looking for a big brake kit that is bred, tested and engineered for the race track you don't have to look any further than Wilwood.
