Default Dead TPMS Question

If you have one dead (dead I mean NO XX,nothing is displayed) TPMS sensor and the alarm for "service tire system: or whatever it says. I cant think of it right now.

If the idiot light is on one the dashboard does this reduce the power of the vehicle for safety reasons? I know I cant go into "competitive driving mode."

Is there a way I cant wake this sensor up without going to the dealership?

Thanks!

If the tire pressure sensor is broken, or if its internal battery is dead (unlikely on a fairly new car), then there's no way to "wake this sensor up".

I see in your avatar that you have black wheels:
  • Are they a recent addition?
  • Were they your original wheels that you had powdercoated?
  • Do they have your original sensors in them?
  • If they are different sensors than you had in your original wheels/tires, did the tire shop do a relearn procedure to program the new sensors into the TPMS computer in the car?
  • Does the pressure displayed in the DIC in your other tires change when you drive - i.e., does the pressure go up as the temp goes up when you drive? If not, then I don't think any of the sensors are properly programmed into the TPMS.

I assume a tire shop mounted up the tires for you, and they could possibly have busted a sensor when taking tires off/putting them on.

You're correct - you can't go into Comp mode or turn AH off completely.

And, YES - the car may pull power on you if you try very aggressive cornering or drag strip launching. If you drive normally around town, it won't bother you.

If these wheels have a set of sensors in them that aren't properly registered with the TPMS computer in the car, it's about a 90 second procedure that your tire shop can do.

Hi Bob,
I bought the car with the black rims. But a recent addition is tires. This problem started after I had the shop install them. Yes they are the original sensors. I would have the RR go to 50PSI and then after a little while it would go back to normal. It would display XX every now and then. Then go back to normal after a ling drive.

The car just seems to be sluggish and not have as much power as it had before. But the DIC doesnt display any errors. I cornered hard and the steering wheel felt heavy....Kindof the brakes where being applied which scared me since you dont want to brake in a corner that you taking very fast. But there was nothing displayed on the DIC as far as the nannies are concerned.

I guess I will just see about getting new sensors and going from there. Since this alarm does take seem to take some of the grunt and fun out of driving the car.

Thank you for the reply.
