Why are you using RP 10W 40 in an LS3?

That's a very valid question, though with those sustained 280 degree oil temps I'm thinking that going with a 10w-40 over say, a 5w-30 might not be a bad idea.
For extreme uses such as that I would likely lean toward Redline or Amsoil.

You might want to consider installing the Z06 engine oil cooler.

I don't see anything to be worried about. 100 miles is not the normal for an analysis. I think the universal averages are based on a 4K change. Like Blackstone said: You still have new engine crud in there. Run it longer next time. Run the lightest oil you can. Later! Frank

My take on it-

The radiator fan does not get turned on max by oil temp until oil hits 302', and the hot oil warning doesn't come on until 320'. So your 280' number is about the point where i would maybe consider using 0W-40 but not 10W-40.

LS2 and LS3 engines throw really high metal counts into the oil until a lot of miles. I sent my last sample to Blackstone at ~14k miles on the car, ~5,700 miles on the oil, 51% Oil Life Remaining. Blackstone recommended that I change my oil more often. And I've seen Blackstone reports on engines with mileage similar to mine that had much higher numbers.

Enjoy!

Some food for thought. We used to use Blackstone all the time, we have since changed. The main point about Blackstone is that they give an opinion that is not always consistent from report to report. Of course, this is just an opinion based on about 100 oil samples a year for the last 5 years.

Compare these universal averages to yours, this is also from a Blackstone report for the same kind of engine.

Could you give some details? If you don't want to post them here, feel free to PM me.

Blackstone prints this same information on every oil report (different numbers for different types of engine, of course), are there other companies that don't?
