Default Trans Cooler Question

I have a 2005 (A4) with 3:15 gears.. it has had a Tune, and CAI.. other than that its "stock" I've run a best of 12.08 @ 115 mph..

I plan on entering a new class (if it goes through) 12.5 Index... I ran the 12.08 in March, but in Aug. and on a Pro Tree I have to DEEP stage to cut a good light... and on a HOT day I slow to 12.64

I think the easiest way to pick up .3 tenths is a 3200 converter and least expensive...

My question is this I have an 05 (A4) it has the Z51 so "I THINK" it has a tranny cooler, however I want to add another after market one a "stacked plate" I had one in my 96 and the trans ran 20-30 deg cooler....

On my C6 I know the trans is in the rear, ... Does it have two lines that carry the trans fluid to and from the stock factory cooler that is in the radiator?

I'm hoping I don't have to run lines from the trans to the cooler I plan on mounting up front on the AC condenser... I would run the after market cooler to work with the stock one in "series" ?

Anyone have any experience with installing an after market cooler in a C6.. with an "Automatic" trans... will I have to run new cooling lines from the trans to the cooler or do they already exist?

hey jpee, just added a ss3600 yank converter to my 05 A4 vert. went with a 24,000 GVW b&m supercooler. used it in series with my factory trans. cooler in the radiator. took a piece of 2 inch flat aluminum and made a mount bracket using the three bolts holding the center rubber spoiler on. made upper brackets to the top of it going to the front bumper support. made the lines go in from the top, so less likely they would be damaged if i ran over something. runs 175-190 max even at the track. if you have a vararam, cut the lower snout off for clearance. i know that takes out the ram effect, but the cooler needs to be out in the coolest air. when the fan runs, it also draws through it. make your intercept on the UPPER cooling line going to the radiator. then from your new cooler to the trans. good luck,

Nice post for me. I have a 05 Z51 with the A4. I installed the 3200 Yank and 3.73 gears. I ran a 12.052 @113 in S. Fl. and I'm going to the track tonight.

It's warmer now than when I ran my previous best. My temps are 199 deg. for tranny temps on highway driving and I'll see how high it gets tonight at the track.

The little tranny cooler in the radiator needs some help with the stall but temps above 225 are bad. What I'm running now is fine till I have Jeremy at HP Sales install a B&M tranny cooler the way Cranky did his.

I'm in the early stages of mounting a cooler in the back, rather than the front. I need to avoid any additional heat on the front of the car. I'll post with pics and results later.

That sounds very interesting.. I'd like to see some photos when your done... where do u plan on mounting it.. I was thinking that the cooler being so close to the mufflers & exhaust you may not get as much cooling as you could get by mounting it up front..

I haven't looked real close yet, but was thinking of mounting my cooler between the radiator & the air conditioner condenser.. ???

I don't know if this is even possible... in one of the posts I read one of the guys is going to cut off the bottom of his Vararam and just mount the cooler right in the center..

I drag the car & really would like to avoid cutting off any of the intake part of my Vararam....

I'm going to look at the rear end as you suggested.. if I can fide a place NOT to close to the exhaust it might be a nice deal...

While it works great for the transmission by mounting up by the condenser and radiator, it doesn't work so well for your engine because my coolant temps spiked big time when I tried it that way.

The ONLY way I would ever mount a trans cooler at the back/underneath the car (yes, where the exhaust and even the trans itself can generate a lot of heat with potentially limited air flow) is to use one of those self contained 'electric fans attached to it' type of units.
Mine is up front against the condensor which I know is not ideal during the summer months.
I do race regularly (on the very same days/at the same track/events that jpee races actually ) all year right through the hot/summer months and my coolant temps aren't exactly loving that that slight condensor/radiator blockage on those 95+ degree days so I've considered other locations as well.
