External Trunk Opener Switch
It's very important that the key works, in case the battery dies in either the car or the fob. In either case, you'll need the key to manually pop the trunk open so you can manually pull the cable that manually opens the driver's door, so you can then open the hood to recharge the battery, or so you can put the fob into the glove compartment slot.
As far as the button above the license plate not working - you do have the fob back there within a couple feet of the rear of the car when you try to operate the button, don't you???
Also, just like the door, sometimes a cellphone close to the fob can interfere with the fob receiving or transmitting the signal necessary to open the door. Sometimes I've tried to open the door with the fob in the same hand I'm using to push the touch pad - and it often won't open when the fob is real close to the door handle. Perhaps same with the button over the license plate - don't hold the fob in the same hand you're using to push the button.
The button back there is just like the doors - the fob has to be in the vicinity of the button to work. Take a look at the picture below:
What you're looking at is the latch in the cargo compartment of an early Z06. I think you have a convertible (you say "trunk", and it looks like a picture of a vert on your profile page). The early Z06 had the same manual latch that is in the trunk of a vert (the later Z06 has an auto pull down latch like the other C6 coupes). I took these pictures when doing the installation of an auto pull down latch on my 2006 Z06.
The picture above shows the manual latch still attached to the rear of the cargo compartment, and the larger/longer auto pull down latch lying on the floor. The red circles are around the antenna units that send a signal to the fob when you push the button above the license plate. One is attached to the rear of the cargo compartment by a clip that holds it in place. The other one to the right is the one associated with the auto pull down latch I'm about to install.
So.....I guess maybe there's some possibility that the wiring harness came loose from the proximity antenna unit, or you've got a bad antenna unit. You should be able to remove the trim piece covering the latch and look to see if your antenna is still connected properly.
Good luck, and don't forget to check your key to make sure you can open the trunk with it.
