I was having trouble getting my 07 MN6 into reverse for a few weeks now and after changing the ATF, adjusting the shifter, and replacing the rubber stops in the shifter the problem was still there so I took it to the dealership on Wednesday. Turns out there was a bad synchronizer wafer in the transmission, and it had actually caused the reverse gear locking groove to get somewhat elongated. With 29575 miles on the car is it just bad luck or is there something that I could be doing while driving that caused this mishap? Fortunately it is still covered by the 100,000 miles 5 year drive train warranty. This happening after the alternator dying the week prior, which drained the battery and causing it not hold a charge makes it a rough month for my baby. I hope that all the extra attention will keep her happy for a while.
I can hardly imagine an instance where, short of jamming it into reverse without fully depressing the clutch, the synchro would go out. Used to be that reverse didn't have synchros; times and trans change. Alternators, on the other hand, can and do go, yours a little prematurely I'd say. Hopefully, both issues are fully fixed and will give you years of great service!
I am sure the clutch was always pressed in all the way when I put her in reverse; it did have trouble going in for a while and a few times it did grind and clunk in. I asked if they could look at the clutch for wear and tear while it was in and up on the lift so we will see. The tech explained and showed me the notch that was worn and showed how basically the grooves did not align causing it to get elongated and making reverse a bear to get into.
I hope all is done for a while.
