So I just had the dealership put a new A6 transmission into my 2008 under warranty, and I've read a lot about the "learning" phase of this transmission. Is it true? What does it entail? How many miles until it "learns"? What is it learning?
Just wondering if I should be driving it in D mode only until it "learns" - or if I can play in S mode too...
Thanks in advance for any information - or advice based on personal experience.
This is a much discussed, and argued, topic. Many don't believe it learns but many have reported that it does and of course GM says it does. I have no personal evidence but from what I've seen here on the Forum the only way to make it learn, if it in fact does, is to use it the way you want it to learn only in "D". Most have said put it in "D" and take it out and hammer it for a couple days. If you are going to be driving easy during that learn time and after you have made it learn, then do all your daily standard driving in "S". If you continue to drive easy in "D" after the learn then it will relearn the milder shifting. Here's the most often cited thread. There have been others since but this one covers it best. If you try it please post your experience back here for future reference.

Thanks Rick, that link was very helpful. I've had the new trans for a couple of days now, and have done both - hard redlining and slow cruising in D mode. I've put it in S mode a couple of times (no paddle shifting yet), and it seems to be a little confused at first, but then tightens up after a few throttles. Going back to D after S mode, the shifting in D, at first, lags a little bit more than before I went into S (and no, it's not just my perception - it's actually happening).
I'm going to see what happens if I just run it hard in D for miles and then go to S.
With my last trans, I remember that after using the paddles it definitely changed how the car drove in S - made it more tight, and I could finally feel the difference between D and S. Maybe that will happen here.
