Default Casper's Hi Lo fan controller

Just got one of these. Nicely made part, easy install, works as advertised!

One concern: I've seen a couple of posts where guys reported the things didn't last that long, say about a year. Is that typical? Or maybe a 1/1,000,000 case and/or due to other factors?

I'm NOT trying to start a hate fest or anything, just want to know what to expect as far as service life. If it is short, I can live w/ it if I know beforehand.

What have others experienced?

I bought the "EXACT" same one that you have... I bought it app 2 yrs ago and the "unit" itself mounted right near the plug next to the radiator... and it had a long wire with the switch the I ran into the car and mounted it on the "Tombstone" right in front of the center console..

Worked like a charm for app 2 years, I drag race and would run the fan after a run with the engine off to cool down between runs.

I would also use it if I were in traffic, to run the fan on HI... never a problem... UNTIL about a month ago when my fan would not run at all under any circumstances even if I turned on the AC.) so I unplugged the Casper unit, and ran it stock...

I contacted Casper and explained this to them, & they were aware of it and said the failure was due to the HEAT from the radiator and the location of the unit being right next to it...

They said they would send me a "NEW DESIGN" version... so I sent in my bad one, and 3 days later got a brand new one!

However the NEW VERSION is a little different, you plug it in near the radiator, and run the wire into the cars cabin (NOT IN THE ENGINE BAY) .. so I did this I put the switch/relay (small black box) on the passenger side behind the right kick panel in front of the door speaker.. not the door but under the dash, and left my original rocker switch in the Tombstone (near the center console)

They (Casper) said the failure was due to excessive heat and now I should be OK as the switch is in the car NOT the ENGINE BAY.

They Casper are an excellent Co. as when I called I had no receipt, and couldn't remember even where I bought my original switch... & they sent me a new one FREE and it works like a charm one of my better investments!

Thanks for the reply, I remember reading your posts about this part when I was researching it.

That's the kind of response we all like to hear about - a company taking care of it's customers.

I'll give them a call next week.

Where does your "little Black Box" mount.. are the wires long enough for you to plug it in near the radiator, and mount the box INSIDE the cabin of the car NOT the engine bay? Thats the trick to prevent it from getting TOO HOT...

Good luck & keep me posted on how you make out and where you mounted the Casper Switch itself.. ..the engine compartment, or inside the car ?

Nothing mounted yet, just received it in the mail today. Was going to install it tomorrow but now I'll wait. It's the old style - wires maybe 1" long on the black box. I'll call Casper Tue. and see if I can swap for the new style.

BTW, how did you run the wire from under the hood to inside the dash? I know the instructions say to "run the wire through the upper door jamb and hide under weather stripping" but I can't see an obvious way to do that w/o the wire being visible somewhere and/or causing the weatherstrip to leak. I'm sure I can figure it out eventually, but pix of a nice sanitary install would be great!

It was done at the local speed shop, & I "KNOW" the wire from the connection near the radiator to the "black control box" was run near the passenger side door.. I was only 1/2 watching but he never removed any weather proofing or weather strip.

There IS a way to do it without using any tools..after you get the new version (where the control mounts IN the cars cabin) see if you can find a way to get it in behind the kick plate on the passengers side.. he did it in 5 min... not counting mounting the 3 way switch which had been done when I got my original switch...

Great its a real easy job to install just plug & play... The part that took me the most time was making a hole on the "Tombstone" to mount the 3 way switch.. we located mine exactly in the center just about 1/2" in front of the console door.
