Yes, codes can be stored. Buy or borrow a code reader and check it out.

With headers and hi-flo cats you already will fail any inspection unless the Inspector looks the other way.

Even if you're not throwing codes about the cats/rear O2's there are catalyst and evap tests that need to complete. If you are throwing rear O2 codes then the tests will for sure not complete. There are ways to "fix" that.

In Texas??

My shop failed me a few weeks ago because my windshield wipers were bad but said nothing about the headers or cats. They even drove the car around the block to test the brakes, which I was NOT happy about.

My rear O2's DTC are set to "No report" so it would "complete" for this part of the OBDII self tests.

Check your state emission tests to determine exactly what they are looking for. In our part of Texas, they do not sniff the tail pipe, but plug into the OBDII port and look for current codes, SES light, and emission self test of the O2 sensors, evap, and other internal systems which don't set a SES light.

I'm not sure about NY, but NJ DMV Inspection has now gone to "Emissions Only". As long as the vehicle passes the tail pipe sniffer test, you're OK. Presuming the ECM was tuned properly after the header install, you would be OK (in NJ). Are you implying that NY Inspection hooks up to the on-board ECM to pull codes?

Not certain about NY either, but in CA (which I've heard NY is trying to be for emission stuff), pop hood, see headers, fail visual.

The same Federal Regs allow up to a $20,000 Fine for any shop replacing the stock cats with anything but stock cats in the original location.

Not generally enforced but still a Federal Regulation.

This is the same place I've been taking the car to for years.

I thought they were joking about driving the car around the block to test the brakes.
