My check engine light came on this morning on my 08. I noticed the gas cap was loose, I live in New Jersey where there is no self service so I am not at fault. Anyway, after tightening the cap and starting the engine the light is still staying on steady.
I only had a minute to run the engine, my question is, Will the light go off by itself after the engine has run for sometime or does the computer needed resetting ?

I think the light will go off after a few start/stop cycles but I'm not sure how many. If you have an Autozone near you they will scan and reset your car for free.

Depends on what's wrong. It may not have been the gas cap. But the goal shouldn't be to turn off the annoying light - it should be to find out what is (or was) at fault.
The only way to know for sure is to retrieve the code(s). You can buy a cheap code reader for the price of a single fill-up.
If the problem has gone away, most codes clear on their own after a certain number of startups, depending on the code. That's unfortunate, because then the owner never knows why the CEL came on in the first place.

Cynical response:
It's designed that way so that every little thing that goes amiss will send folks straight to the (often unscrupulous) dealer who can then sell you some replacement F55 shocks

Usually if the gas cap is the issue, the "check gas cap" warning will come up on the DIC. You may have another small issue related to emissions going on. I would jsut take it to the dealer since it is likely still under warranty and have them take a look.

In my past experience, it will take ~12 engine restarts for the CEL to go out. Very likely it's the fuel cap as it appears to be a common problem with the C6 generation. My car will set a CEL about once a year. The first time my dealer checked it and said it was a loose fuel fill cap. The next incidents I just drove the car over a period of days and the light went out after about a dozen engine starts. The CEL usually would appear only the next morning after a fuel fill-up so the cause was always apparent to me so I didn't worry about it. Even though you may be installing the fuel cap correctly, the fuel caps can still set the CEL. Just remove and reinstall if it sets the CEL. JMHO.

If GM were devious, it'd be the other way around: the light stays on until you give up and take it to the dealer to be cleared. Then they can sell you the shocks, coolant flush, muffler bearings, etc.
Bumped this thread because i got a steady check engine light last night. My gas cap has been titsup for awhile now so i hopped to my local dealership to get a new one this morning. Hopefully the cel will reset itself in time (hasnt happened yet) if not i'll get the code read for me.
On a sidenote the dealership had a great set of OEM chrome wheels there for 1995.00, says they list at 4000.00. Does that seem right?

I happen to have my 2007 MSRP sticker sitting here beside me. It shows
Chrome aluminum wheels $1,850.
Some deal, they even marked it up over sticker!
Offer them $1,000 and that would be a good deal. Damn thieves!

I thought the wheels were like a 1900.00 option when i bought the car back in 06. At the time i didnt get them because they were on back order and i didnt want to risk waiting another 6-8 weeks for wheels. 1000.00 is what their worth to me and i'll offer them just that. My guess is if they sit there on the shelf for a few weeks they might just take it.
