My 2009 Coupe with A6 has 7000 miles on the odometer, never raced or abused. For the last few weeks I've noticed a "tock" sound from the rear which seems to be associated with gear changes in the auto transmission (best guess). Not real loud, but noticeable and definitely a change from before.
Questions --
1. Is this sound likely to be coming from the auto transmission, or rather from some other source?
2. Is it normal? I don't like to hear the sound of gear changes in the A6. I had a 2006 Coupe for 4 years and never heard a sound like this.
3. What might be done to eliminate it?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm probably looking at a trip to the dealer service department.
Do you only hear it on upshifts? Can you change it with throttle input (tip-in / tip-out)? Does it happen on downshifts? Do you hear it when you manually upshift? Sorry for the 20 questions just trying to get a better idea of what you have going on.

I seem to hear it when the car is slowing down, not when accelerating or upshifting.

I took the car to the dealer yesterday. Within an hour they had diagnosed and resolved the problem. Turns out the "Rear Axle Nut" needed to be tightened. I've no idea where this nut is located or what it does. I drove the car about 15 miles on errands afterward and the noise is GONE!
I love it when solutions are so easy. Apparently this problem is fairly common, according to the service writer, so they went pretty quickly to the correct cause. No charge for the work, it was covered under warranty. Another excellent service experience from James Wood Chevrolet in Denton.

Good to hear it was an easy fix! A lot of people on here have had the rear axle nuts loosen on them; on the earlier C6’s there was a TSB. The nut is located on both rear hubs, if you take the center caps of your wheels off you will see it, it’s 33mm or 34mm if I remember correctly and the torque is around 150ft.lbs.
