Default Transmission Problems

Well, it finally happened. Last night I was heading home from work and decided to gun it on an empty strtch of road. I heard a big bang and now my transmission is fried. I stopped and checked and there was no obvious fluid leaks but now the check engine light is on and it won't shift past 2nd gear. I was able to limp back home. I have a modified 08 C6 A6 (LTH, Cam, 3200 stall, 3.42 gears, and a tune, making 453 rwhp). What do you guys think I should do? Should I just have it rebuilt or take this opportunity to put in something beefier. I was even thinking of changing it to a manual transmision. Needless to say, I'm not very hapy right now but I knew after modifying it that something in the stock driveline was due to break. To be honest I thought my halfshafts would go before the transmission.

You might want to contact RPM Transmissions as they seem to be seriously knowledgeable in all things related to the transmissions and differentials plus they are a forum sponsor.

Sorry to hear about yout transmission. If you want a manual transmission, I would do the conversion. I recently completed mine from an A6 to a MNZ. Good luck!

Give Mike Kurtz at Century Transmission in Richmond, TX a call. He can build you something that'll be pretty much bulletproof AND you'll get a one year warranty with it, something that nobody else out there is offering right now.

Not to oversimplify, but have you checked the codes yet? The "big bang" part sounds ominous, but there are several members here who have lost everything above second gear (limp mode), and they turned out to have one of several issues, but not a fried tranny. Stuck solenoid, bad module, casting residue in the valve body, etc. Just trying to be optimistic for you!

Believe it or not, if you end up getting a CEL that's usually a sign of the problem not being as severe as it could be as it's usually worse when the car won't shift properly (or at all) but doesn't throw a code (ask me how I know).

Your right. I figured if the tranny had been fried I wouldn't have been able to move at all. After some phone calls I towed the car to the dealership. They'll check it and see what's wrong. I'll keep you posted after I hear back from them tomorrow. I've already talked to RPM Transmissions as well as Circle D transmissions. Both of them were very helpful. If I do need a new transmission it'll be a hard choice of who to go with.

Did hear the bang doing shifting...I mean as you were letting off the clutch or did you hear it while in gear and accelerating?

Similar thing happened to me a month or so ago...The 08's Sept 07-Jan08 builds have some debris left over from casting the tranny. This could come loos and get loged in one of the controllers in the tranny.

Mine worked its way loose in a few days and a dealer could not find a problem.

It's and easy choice. RPM is far and above most all others. They are #1 for good reason. I beat the heck out of mine with 900HP and no problems at all - yet

Thanks all for the advice. This is an opportunity for me to just get a built transmission. I'll just be without my car for a while while I saved up the $$$$. It'll all be better in the end. At least this way I won't be able to put anymore miles on it. Even if it was just an easy problem, I was oplanning on upgrading anyways so might as well do it all at once.
