thats pretty much it. i have a 05 z51 mz6. i want to be able to beat on it with out the fear of it exploding so easily. dosnt seem very easy to find a 06 peice. what have you guys done? i really dont wanna spend $2000
i know you gotta pay to play. but it only make 357 rwhp now with cai, tune and threomstat. my plans are full exhaust and cam with ported intake that should get me to 425 430 right? im looking for something that will be moderatly reliable maybe even hold up to drag radials once or twice a year. im not looking for totaly bulletproof at least not yet.
Sir, the diff on my 07 Z51 just hit over 100,000 miles and will be replaced with a diff from RPM. They are not cheap, but it should last at least another 100,000 miles. Good Luck!
I am sure I am on borrowed time but I used the pfadt trans and engine mounts to reduce the "flex" that puts strain on the trans and diff. I am putting down 750rwhp/750rwtq on a stock 05 diff with a hardened axle on the long side. Have the widebody with 345 drag radials. When it finally breaks I will probably just replace it with a zo6 rear end. Gonna pound on it till it gives.

When the diff DOES finally let loose, there is a decent chance the trans output shaft gets bent along with the carnage. Initially my feeling was the same as yours. Why spend the 2 large to swap out the diff now when I can just fork over the same cash (plus a tow fee) to do it after the thing grenades. But if that trans shaft bends, you just piled on another 2-3K in work to be done! Just something to consider.
There is a $1200.00 dollar core charge involved with these diffs. If we recieve a 06' and up diff in good shape then you would recieve that back. If we recieve a 05' diff in good shape, we would credit $600 towards the core charge. So, yes there is an additional $600.00 when dealing with a 05'.
The above advice concerning the output shaft is on-point. Often I get calls from people who know they have a blown diff, and have not pulled it out yet. I will recommend pulling the rear before ordering, in order to prevent a suprise when the new diff arrives. Also, a blown diff is not usually a very good core.
I'm still of the mindset to let it grenade. I have the DTE brace on my '05 diff with >700RWHP and R-Compund Toyo R888. It's been to the track once and gets used on the street often. Who knows how much life it has left in it? If it takes the tranny output shaft with it that is an excuse to upgrade to a Z output shaft to match a Z diff. But more than likely I would swap in a built C5 three rib diff.
The "replace prior to breakage" applies to the motor too. At my power level I cannot expect my shock shortblock to last forever and if it lets go it could ruin the block so why not just replace the pistons and rods before it lets go? But I'm not going to do that either.
Like Tom says when things "let go" they generally cost much more to repair then replace before. If you are planning on keeping the car for a while and building it up, you should do it before it cost you money, can also be a safety reason for the preventative measures, what if this happens at the "wrong" time, it could cost you a LOT more than parts...
