i changed the oil for the first time today and i was curious how much oil the c6 vette takes? i had read 6 quarts, but i could only get 5 1/2 in by the time it reached the recomended level on the dipstick....? did i not get all the old oil out? or is this normal?

If yours is a 2005 base model it's 5 1/2 qts. If it's a Z51 it's 6 qts. The dip stick reading is always about 1/4" high on my Z51. It's not a big deal.

I only put 5 qts in... & I drag race it on weekends..."IF" I were going to race it on a road course I would put in 6 qts.

My thinking is in drag racing, the oil is all pushed to the rear of the oil pan, (where the pick up is) and I'm only on it for 12 sec ...

I never take it on a road race track, and after 4000 miles (when I change it) its still at the lower mark on the dipstick...I seriously doubt 1/2 Qt would make any difference in the life of my motor...

When I had my 96 C4 I would run it with 4 qts...I bought it new in 1996 raced it most weekends, and put on 56,000 miles the only breakage I had was the rear end... (I was using a 3400 converter)

On my C6 its never used any oil between oil changes (every 4000 mi)

mine is a z51,i was wondering if the angle it was setting at (front only on ramps)might not allow all the oil to drain out?

well the oil level is right on...my question is,is there a good chance that a 1/2 quart of that oil (old oil) part of that total amount? does the car need to be completely level to ensure proper drainage?

Just drain it, & add 5.5 qts... the extra 1/2 qt of old oil wont hurt ANYTHING.. just DO it and drive it, your getting paranoid over 1/2 qt of old oil ! IT WON'T hurt anything ... !!

If your car really holds 6 qts and you only drained 5.5, that means about 10% of your oil is old. Just do the next change 10% sooner.

I checked it out the first time I changed my oil using Ramps, I jacked the rear to make it level, no measurable additional oil came out. Now I just change it without jacking, takes 5 1/2 Quarts per the manual and is right on the full line on the dipstick.

I have Z51 and have never been able to get more than 5 1/2 qts in - but I also don't worry when it's a little over. As mentioned above, you can add an extra qt when road racing - a little extra oil isn't going to hurt and a little old oil left in isn't going to hurt either.
