With the dry sump system the two plugs will drain it all out. Just wait 5 minutes after running the car (after shutdown) to get an accurate reading on the dipstick. I've seen people overfill when they are unfamiliar with this setup.
thanks, that what I needed. Just got home after a 700 delivery drive and was thinking I ought to do a low milage first change. In just seemed odd that the tank would gravity feed into the sump?
thanks gn
The rear plug drains the oil pan sump, so not much oil will come out. The front plug drains the reservoir and oil lines, so it drains a bunch. After it has drained for a 15-20 minutes, push up on the flexible oil line(there are two side by side) to the rear. Do this three or dour times(oil will squirt out of the drain hole) then let it sit a couple of minutes and repeat. I normally repeat this a half dozen times as the oil hose hangs a little low next to the retainer clip and won't drain unless you push up on it. After I drain the oil and replace the two plugs, I then remove the oil filter(by now it's cooled down enough to where the oil won't burn your hand). Pre Fill the oil filter, rub some clean oil on the gasket and put 'er on.
Oh, and it's a good time to install some 12X1.75mm magnetic drain plugs that you can pick up at AutoZone.

The reservoir does not drain back into the oil pan. It does connect to the top of the pan but there are molded in oil lines that direct the oil to the second stage oil pump at the front of the engine. The front drain plug just opens up the molded in oil lines allowing the oil from the reservoir to drain.

There are publicity photos from several years ago of the LS7 oil pan which shows the cast-in oil passageways that connect the oil pump stages to the dry sump reservoir.
