My check engine light came on the other day, so I bought one of those OBD II scanner devices to see what the problem was (the machine cost half of what Chevy charges to diagnose it). It says "P0422". I erased the code, though, and now I am thinking that it actually was P0442, instead.
The causes are:
p0422 Main catalyst efficiency below threshold
p0442 evaporative emissions system small leak
Are these worth taking the car to the mechanic over? It sounds like something that I shouldn't worry about until I have to get it smogged...
Car info: 2005 coupe 6MT
thanks!!

Well, wait for it to reappear. Then write the code down.
Either one could cause you to fail your emission test. Just keep checking then look for the cause.
Thanks! I drove the car briefly, and the light has not reappeared yet. If it is just emissions related, I have 1.2 years until I have to do a Smog test. I am just concerned if it has the potential to damage the engine.
If it is the catalyst code and it comes back take it to the dealer. That code indicates the cat isn't working properly. The cats are covered under the 8 yr/80K mile emissions warranty required by the government so unless you are over the 80K the car is still covered.

My car only has 37K miles on it, so I guess I am under warranty. I didn't realize that the cats have a longer warranty period. If the light comes back on, Ill take it to the dealer. I'll let them use my scanner so they don't charge $100 to read the light
