Default Rear cradle and alignment

When dropping the rear cradle, does a 4 wheel alignment need to be performed after re installation of the rear cradle?

I haven't dropped mine myself, but if there is no alignment pins to put it exactly back where it was I would say yes. I can take a look in the manual to see, but there is always play in the mounting holes.

Technically you're supposed to, but if you mark everything real well with a Sharpie marker beforehand you can usually get away without needing it.

ITs good practice to have it re-aligned. The alignment pins put things back damn close but it could be off from where it was a very tiny bit....

On my stang I drilled small 1/8" holes on each side of the K-member and used those to realign it during re-installation. I wouldn't drill extra holes in my Vette though! But, marking it real well should do the trick. I would still align it anyway.

Thanks for the responses. My 08 with 35k is at the dealership having the ring and pinion gears replaced due to a decel whine. The backlash was incorrectly set from the factory causing irregular gear pattern wear. They ordered new set of gears, pinion bearing and some shims to properly set up the differential. I will make sure an alignment is performed prior to pick up.

if you mess with the lower caster/alignment bolts, then yes. otherwise, just get the alignment checked at a shop, if its been awhile, its probaly off anyways.

The SM calls for a realignment when that type of service is performed. Since the upper control arm has to be removed they refer to that section of the SM which has instructions for realigning the car.

I don't buy it. There is no adjustment in the upper control arms. I say as long as you did not mess with the lower control arms (and there's no reason to), then there is very little play between the cradle and the alignment pins. I mean, the tires aren't cheap so it's probably a good idea, but I don't think its "necessary".

If this is a warrenty claim................ hell yea make'm align all 4 wheels.
They may do it as a matter of the repair, but, I think asking is in order.

As Im having tire clearance issues with my new rear 19x12.5" Forged Wheels

2012 Grand Sport

Thanks, Chuck Auburn,WA

The rear cradle has alignment pins but there is some play in the holes. the frame should be marked when removing to reinstall correctly in the same location. A alignment will be covered when changing the rear gear due to it being part of the procedure.

I've had mine off 4 times and at a dealer (warranty) once. I doubt the dealer did one, but I never did. 156K miles now and the rear tires have always worn perfectly.
