Default engine light question

I have a 2007 cpe z51 m6 with 19K miles and my engine light came on yesterday and has stayed on. The oil life is 27%, last changed June 2010 at 13K. Can I harm the engine by driving with the light on? I plan on changing the oil next week. Thanks for the help.

P.S. can anyone in San Diego area recommend a service provider? Don't like to go to the dealer.

If it is a check engine light, it is unrelated to your oil life; that will give you a message of its own. You should get the codes checked to see what the issue is. Most parts houses will do it for free. There is a good chance it is your gas cap I'd say.

People who have had the issue usually say it takes a certain number of driving cycles for the light to go away after you tighten the cap.

Good luck!

I would suggest you completely remove the fill cap and then reinstall. Just twist it on without pushing in on it. If it is due to a loose gas cap, it will take about 12 engine start cycles for the CEL to turn off in my past experience. Just drive the car normally and accumulate the 12 starts over the next few days. My 06Z would set the CEL on a once a year basis due to the gas cap. Not often enough to motivate me to get the cap replaced.
