Default CAM Selection for my LS2

Below are the current modifications I have on my 2005 C6 6-Speed Vert. I'm looking for a CAM package that I'll be installing myself. I want a CAM that's reliable, gives me a good increase in HP, doesn't surge when I'm in 6th gear @1500 rpm, and has the distinctive CAM sound at idle.

- Vararam Intake
- Spinmaster Ported Intake/Throttle Body
- 180 Degree Thermostat
- LG Headers with High Flow Cats
- Full Corsa Exhaust
- Doug Rippie Dyno Tune

382 RWHP

I contacted Thunder Racing and this is what they recommended-

Thunder Racing CAM Package ~$1000 for CAM, Springs, and Rods
"TR TRuTorq" Level 2 - 223/230 .609/.604 115 LSA

Do I need a high performance oil pump?!?
http://www.thunderracing.com/shop-by...388.html#P5278

Thanks!

That's a mild cam and should be easily tuned for no surge at 1200 rpm. You have a DRM tune now. If he will be doing the tune for you, ask him. He should know what size cam he can tune to meet your requirements.

That's a baby cam (IMHO). If I were looking for a tame cam, I'd go with Spin's 230/234 at the very least.

I'll be going 238/242 myself-

That sounds like a nice cam to me.

I want a mild cam that will give me the HP boost I'm looking for but it has to be reliable. Hopefully this cam will have the distinctive sound at idle?!?

There's a huge difference in the two cams you're considering. First will be mild with good manners. Second will have a rough idle and have more drivability issues. Sure, it will make more hp, but at a cost. Some will tell you they can tune that second one to drive like stock. That hasn't been my experience with a similar cam. Fun for a while, but gets old quick.

Edit....whoops....what happened to the 231/234 112lsa cam? Looks like you edited it out? That's what I was referring to.

Yes, you will notice the cam at idle.

I like the 231/234 (of those 2 choices)

You've mentioned reliability twice. Big overlap cams can be just as reliable as low overlap cams, they just can have downsides in terms of low rpm driviability and fuel consumption. Focus on drivability and power curve to decide your specs. To increase reliability, select cam lobes without massive lift and run a good spring.

I was looking the 231/234 112lsa CAM until I read further and it says "Ready to race? Our lineup of max-effort power cams is a great choice for stock cubic inch combinations. These cams will require gears, converter, and tuning, If you need assistance with cam selection, please contact our sales department."

I'm not looking to upgrade Gears or Converters...

Either way do I need a high volume oil pump with a mild cam?!?

With a "TR TRuTorq" Level 2 - 223/230 .609/.604 115 LSA cam will I be able to drive in 6th on the freeway going roughly 65-75 MPH and not have issues with it surging etc?

You shouldn't. I have a very similar cam in my LS3 (little less on the intake, more on the exhaust, same LSA). The idle is a little rough sounding, but it will pull smoothly from idle on up.

It looks like I'll be installing a cam and differential brace once all the snow melts in Minnesota
