Deep pockets. You can but its cheaper to just buy a new car. I saw a thread on here at one point where someone did. I think it was close to $4k-$5k. I think RPM can do the conversion. I know they can put autos in Vipers and Vettes. I'm sure they can go the other way.
I understand the money issue.
I bought the car without a tranny, so now i have to install one, and thought i might as well put in a manual one.
To replace your auto tranny is just the cost of the tranny and the installation. To replace the auto with a standard requires buying ALL the standard transmission parts (transmission, clutch, flywheel, slave and master cylinder, pedals, linkage, wiring, etc, etc, etc.) and the cost of a major installation by a knowledgable installer. A BIG difference in cost and time.

Uh...no.....
I may have missed a few smaller things but here's a pretty complete list of what's needed to install an automatic into a stick car:
- Flywheel
- Torque tube
- Shifter assembly
- differential (unless your installing an A6 in a Z06, otherwise they're not interchangeable)
- Transmission
- BCM reprogramming
- PCM swap and reprogramming
- Fuse block replacement and/or rewiring (on 06 and later as both have slots for TCM fuses)
- Trans cooler lines
- Engine harness rewiring
- TCM harness (on 06 and later) or an aftermarket trans controller for a 2005
- Torque converter
- Trans fluid
- Exhaust system (possibly, as some systems won't fit with an automatic)
So it's a WHOLE lot more than just the transmission and installation.

He's not installing an automatic in a stick car. He wants to change his automatic car to a stick. He already has an A4 car, it's missing the trans.
I can tell you going from a A6 to an A4 is not only expensive but time consuming. If I had to do this all again, I would have sold my vette and bought another one with the version i wanted.. seriously.. so trade cars or sell yours and\then buy one with a M6 in it..
It sounds like you have to buy everything anyway so some money out is expected. I changed my A4 to a manual.
Off the top of my head you'll need (I'll add stuff as I think of it):
- the complete driveline for the manual, including the torque tube, clutch, slave and master cylinders
- clutch pedal and brake pedal
- both switches that go at the top and bottom of clutch pedal (one is for starting, one is for turning off the cruise when you touch the clutch)
- shifter (should come with driveline)
- manual transmission harness (If your car is an F-55 then the manual harness will mate up directly, if not you have to change the connector from your auto harness to the manual harness)
- to rewire the ecm for the manual tranny since you are eliminating the tranmission control module
- to have the ecm and bcm re-programmed with a Tech II to manual parameters
