So after 46k miles I just swapped out my OEM run flats for non-run flats and I noticed a difference right away. It's quieter, smoother, and somewhat disturbingly, less stable on initial turn in. I know the sidewalls are softer than the rock hard Goodyears, but it now feels a little like my old 68 GTO on M&H slicks... I think the ultimate grip is higher with the new rubber, but the half second it takes to settle after the initial turn in feels like the *** is going to come around. Is there an adjustment to toe or camber that will bring back the go cart feeling it had with the GY's? It is freeway flyer, so I'm not looking for the ultimate trackday settings, I'd just like to settle it down a little.
Technically, it's a "08 base coupe with z-51 bars front and rear, Pfadt poly bushings (on the bars), lowered as far as it will go on stock bumpers (rears are cut in half), and the rear toe is set to zero (or it was, 20k ago). I'm considering going back to the stock rear bar to reduce the initial oversteer, but thought I'd check with you guys for suggestions.
Not looking to reduce flex - looking to "tune out" the effects of the flex. It seems unreasonable that the came suspension settings that work for the rock hard Goodyears would also work for a conventional tire. It feels so odd with these tires that at first I thought the lug nuts were loose. That can't be right, can it? BTW, I ditched the front GY's about 20k ago, and the car felt great right from the start. It's the rear that has me concerned.
As a commuter car that sees 60 miles of freeway each day, I went with what worked great on my 05 GTO - Hankooks. A buddy of mine just put the same tires on his 2005 Porsche with no complaints.
Perhaps it's just something that I have to get used to, but I have never had a car experience such a dramatic change in feeling from one brand of tire to another.
That my be it. I have a total of about 90 miles on them right now, but they will get a workout later today. We'll see if they mellow out.
On the other hand, I have purchased plenty of high performance tires over my years - never have I seen this much of a change right out the tire shop door.
