The time is here to do brakes on my 06Z51. I have a set of GM pads already.
1) can the drilled rotors be turned?
2) if not, are drilled rotors really better? I might do 1 track event this year, just mainly driving it like I stole it.
3) I'm keeping the stock calipers and already have replacement stock pads, is it worth it to upgrade the rotors to anything better, if so, recommendations?
I did brakes on my 06 Z51 about a year or so ago using GM ceramic pads. I did not turn the rotors, felt no need to since they weren't warped or grooved excessively. I have heard from others that they can be turned, but if you don't see a problem why bother? You might do some deglazing with sandpaper to clean them up a little, but that's all I'd do. As far as drilled rotors and slotted rotors etc. they are intended to control heat during hard use, like on the track, but if you are planning to do that, your GM pads would be worthless and you would need appropriate track compatable pads to prevent fade.
If your rotors aren't scored or damaged in any way and are above the minimum thickness spec GM recommends not turning them if you are replacing the pads with GM pads.
My '08 rotors were worn to about 1/2 their life at 52K miles. I had them turned to clean up the surface and then zinc plated to eliminate exterior rusting. Make sure the guy who's doing the turning has lots of experience with drilled/slotted rotors, so they don't get ruined. The speed, feed rate, and amount removed on a pass is different than solid rotors.
