Default 2005 LS2 Air Intake - Upgrade Ideas?

I have been reading that most of the aftermarket CAI's don't filter as well as stock intakes. Does anyone have an opinion on installing an LS3 intake on a LS2? I heard they made some significant improvements in air flow, and I assume they filter sufficiently at the same time.

Default FAST air intake

When I modded my 2008 Vette, the first thing my mechanic did was install a FAST intake...everything else came after...Heads, headers, orsa Sports, crossovers, etc. FAST INTAKE, Pal and then start modding.

I believe the LS3 intake is the same as the ZO6 and it flows more air but with the same filter performance. Not sure how difficult it is to mod yours. I'd stay away from the so called "High Flow" filters because that means low filtration performance. Truth be told the performance increase is so small that I think it's hardly worth the trouble.

My car is 05 vette MN6. I rececntly added one of Airraids oiless CAI. IMO throttle reasponse was much better. Probably didn't add much if any HP. I did have K&N filter replacements installed already and didnt notice anything when switched to those. Hope that helps.

There are only a few true "cold air intakes" on the market. Be sure that is what you get.

I just purchased a VaraRam as that is what the tuner suggested. Don't believe all the hype about water injestion. Simply not true.

If you're scared of putting on a filter that goes on millions of cars I wouldn't worry about trying to get too much more performance out of your car.

All mods have consequences over being stock.

Drive it stock and enjoy the vette how it came.

My suggestion would be to put a good CAI on your car and not worry about the non OEM filter.

Well, it actually is true, but if you're careful you will likely not have a problem with it.

FAST intake manifolds do work, especially on the LS2 cars ...but I believe the original poster is looking at merely cold air intakes/filter systems (the piece that sits right above the radiator at the very front of the motor), not the intake manifold that the FAST replaces.

Halltech and Vette-Air manufacture excellent products. We use the Halltech Killer Bee II in conjunction with the Vette-Air on our Z06 and have found excellent performance gains. (There is no water ingestion with this setup.) Check out their respective websites and see what is right for you.

For cold air I like the Callaway Honker, it looks like OEM, mounts to the car better than other CAIs, it's easy to clean and access to the filter, and very high overall quality.

The LPE is good quality also but looks aftermarket and is a pain to access the filter.

For non cold air I like the Airaid; great quality, easy to install , large filter surface and very inexpensive.

I have seen most of the others but not a Halltech so I can't comment on it.

I have Vararam and i think it's pretty sweet.... I noticed a huge difference and install was pretty easy i did it myself... You don't need precut shroud, that Vararam sells unkless you plan on selling car...I bought mine on Ebay for about 270$ and it came w a paper pre cut shroud from (houston, TX). My local tuner suggested Vararam as did most C6 owners in my area. As for water getting in it, I'd say it's probable if you got the nose of the c6 submerged in water, or maybe a little if it was really pouring but i'd have to say you're crazy if you are driving in weather like that anyways in a 60k car. Hope this helps bud

You think it's crazy to drive in the rain?

Also consider that these cars are generally not 60k dollar cars anymore now that they've been out so long. The price of a C6 ranges from low 20s to low 100s (not that a 60k dollar car is something special that shouldn't see rain anyway...nor is a 100k dollar car).

Lol In my opinion I think it's crazy to drive in heavy rain or flooded areas. I also should add my vette is not my daily driver, if you live in an area where this would happen then the vararam would not be a good choice. Also I must say the Vararam looks like sh** when installed, but performance wise it's a great product. I've seen sleeker air intakes out there but I didn't want to pay 500 bucks just for looks.

I can pretty much get on board with everything you just said there.

I drove from southern Maine to southeastern PA in Tropical Storm Hannah...it was like driving in the worst thunderstorm ever..for 500 miles. Guess what..I have a Vararam and have driven since then thru a few other deluges. I would say, I'd prefer to avoid them, but, I'm not getting rid of my Vararam. My old, 2006 LS2, A6, turned a PB of 12.3 @ 115.7 on street tires and a month later a 12.2 flat @ 116 on borrowed DR's. Stock buddy...no intakes, or headers, or throttle bodies, etc.... Just an everyday guy with out even a line lock.
I think I did okay...

Just came back from the first street run, here's the good news:

Other good things of note:
1. I got to listen to the new Foo Fighters album about 3 times, IT IS THAT GOOD, if you are a fan, download the entire album.
2. Install took about 2 1/2 hours, i was totally **** about the details.
3. The template took some messing around with to get it measured out correctly on all 4 sides.
4. I siliconed both the inside and outside "seam"...couldn't hurt, and it made me feel better about all the water bologna that you keep reading about on here...

5. If you don't own Race Ramps, borrow them from a friend, they rock!

Now for the bad news...after much due diligence in the forum and a little alchohol last night, I mustered up the courage to attack the radiator shroud that is normally referenced by the GM Part # PITA...I have an 07 MN6 that I bought about a year ago with 15k miles on it...when I went to get at the shroud it was obvious that it had been out before, or, it was replaced and there were push pins missing, etc...so it did come out of the top in about 5 minutes and it did go back almost as fast, I just had to accept the fact that my girl has been around the block a few times....that is what you get for buying used.

So, I did have my moment of (&)^*&^*&^(^!!!!! ......But, now that I spun the wheels in 3rd at 2700 RPM I do feel better though!

THIS IS ONE OWNER/FORUM MEMBER THAT CAN RECOMMEND THE CALLAWAY HONKER, LOOKS GREAT, ADDS OBVIOUS POWER/RESPONSE!

VERY HAPPY!
