Default Drive train strength?

How much horsepower/torque can the drive train handle? When I get my corvette I was thinking about twin turbo once I get used to the power!

I have an 07 (05s ha a weak differential prone to breaking) with 650rwhp and 576 tq, a double disk clutch and R compounds with the stock drivetrain. The trick is being gentle on take off, popping the clutch will blow the rear at stock power levels. If you roll the throttle you will hook better and keep everything in one piece.

Ill be adding a DTE brace just in case this summer.

It's amazing you're 05 diff is still in one piece. You must not drag race or launch hard at all. I broke my 05 diff on street tires (INVOs) and I do not pop the clutch at all. Those 05 diffs are as weak, or weaker than the diffs that came in the 4th gen F-Bodies. I wish I would've upgraded to a C5 diff before my diff broke. I would've broke even on the swap and had a stronger drivetrain.

To the OP it depends what year C6 you buy. 05s had the weakest diffs. Also, if you plan on drag racing the car things will start breaking. That's just how it goes. The 06+ diffs can take around 550rwhp. I just depends how you drive the car and if you're getting any wheelhop....which is the #1 diff killer.

So what's the solution for over 550hp, the Z06 diff? Also does anyone know whatever happened to the 'iron' diff case the DTE was supposedly working on?

Not necessarily a ZO6 unit but you'll want something a little stronger, especially if you're drag racing. If your 550HP car is just a wknd cruiser than a stock unit is fine, as long as there is no wheel hop or a lot of abuse taking place.

I have a built C5 diff in mines but I didn't build it for added strength. I built it because I wanted to re-gear it and thought it was a good time to get it done. IMO the C5 3-rib diffs are a good and cheap solution for the C6 guy who drag races. If you manage to break one these diffs are cheaper and easier to find. All you need is a conversion bracket and you're set. No diff is completely bullet proof and that's why a lot of builders don't put a rating on there diffs or trannys. For every diff out there, there's a car that will tear it right up.

As for the DTE case iron diff, I haven't heard anything new about it.

It all depends on the driver. I'm at 735/664 on a stock drivetrain but I am planning on some upgrades.

It's going to be a 2008, I was planning on 650 to the wheels. So I just need to upgrade the diff?

i have a 05 (weak diff case) i was going to go to add the case off a 06-11 diff

http://www.zip-corvette.com/ProductD...GR-SR&CTitle=&

plus a few other small upgrades and a dte brace to handle that type of power. Since you have a 08 i think a dte brace and you will be fine

Your profile does not list if you have the A4, A6 or M6 trans. The automatics will last a bit longer providing that you launch the car correctly. There are a number of very quick automatics that have run many, many quarter mile runs and have not destroyed their rears.

There are also some M6 cars, ie: Joe_G who has made many 1/4 mile passes prior to destroying his 05 rear.

Avoiding wheel hop is the key. If you can launch the car without wheel hop (tire shake) your rear will remain intact longer. The DTE brace will help but the best advice is to resolve wheel hop issues prior to mashing the go pedal

I made 301 passes before I did this to my rear.

Tommy is so right. It seems wheel hop is the problem. I have seen many 05 rears end up like mine, but in my experience more from street tires and wheel hopping.

I have the c5 conversion like Sparo, it is cost effective as you can buy 2 or more c5 rears built with gears for the cost of a stock 06+ rear. At least you could last time I checked.

Oh and by the way. When your diff blows you have no core. So consider that before you start beating on your car. A 3.42 05 diff is a nice upgrade for an automatic vette and as noted autos don't seem to blow the rears.

And ps...I cannot recall a time when a diff blew that it didn't take out the tranny mainshaft, requiring a $2400 rebuilt tranny. I had a brace on mine too....

For all out strength, the c6z06 is the hot ticket. I don't recall anyone blowing one up including RatttG...in his 9 second n/a and lower than that on NOS c6Z launching on the bottle from the rev limiter. Problem is you have to replace the mainshaft to a 30 spline to use it, and all you can get is 3.42 gears.

I'm interested to hear more on the ECS billet carrier and shaft combo. It looks strong, and is priced the same as the two hardened shafts.

I'm throwing a sc on and will drive it till it blows and then go forged. Turbo's are cool but unless I was doing a 1K+ hp build I would just get a supercharger. ECS does a pretty nice turbo setup for around $15k. If you do it right you will have about about 75%+ of what you paid for your 08 in the setup. Have you let your dad know that part yet? Just asking since you said he was paying for the car. It will make insurace for 18 year old unbelieveably high too. I'm not being a ballbuster I am just trying to give some facts.
