Cold/winter time = 140s/150s once it's fully up to temperature.
Warmer/summer months = 160s/170s on up to 180s when racing.

That's with a 3200 stall and small auxiliary transmission cooler, though it was pretty much the same with the stock stall as well.

My 08 A6 Coupe coupe will peg 200* when doing a spirited canyon run. I'm new to A6, all others were a manual, so I was wondering about this myself. That's stock, no external aux coolers...anyone else?

I just happened to check mine after being in some traffic. It was 200. Then dropped to 190. I was under the impression That anything near and over 200 was danger/warning etc. ruined fliud and warped clutches and such.At least on the diesel truck forums towing heavy 200 is getting borderline for trans and fliud life.

I was wondering about what you mention above and I was hoping for some good feedback about the upper acceptable limit for tranny temps. Hopefully more folks will come back with some good info.

While 200 isn't quite as preferable as say 170, it isn't exactly fully into the 'danger zone' either. I would think on a warm day in stop and go traffic that 210 or above is where one might start to become concerned.
I personally am not comfortable with anything over 180 as I race my car regularly and am much harder on my trans than the average driver so I prefer the extra measure of security that lower temps might provide. Running it hard when it's temps are too low (say, 100 degrees) can be hard on a trans too though.
Now if you're still at 200 while just cruising on the highway in overdrive at only 60mph on a 40 degree day then yes, that could mean a possible internal issue.

With ambient temps I see 176 with highway driving. Any sort of spirited driving with the summer and over 200 is easy. The highest I've ever seen is 219.

So...what's involved in adding (or enlarging) a tranny fluid cooler?

I've found that you really don't want to get on an A6 below 100 degrees tranny temp. They seem to operate best between 100-200. However, I've been at the drags in July and August and had mine as high as 207-208 and it was okay. I have buddies who put in a tranny cooler, which helps in hot weather if you're going to drive it hard. However, it also extends the cold temp range so it takes longer to warm up...say when you're running in 30-40 F temperature days. The key is, get your fans programmed so they turn on earlier for the whole car to run better.
