Default 2008 auto diff in 2005 manual?

Does anyone know if a 2008 Z51 differential from an A6 will go into a 2005 manual without issue?

That's a good question...I do know that a 2008 manual differential will go into a 2005 automatic with the use of an adaptor plate and some very minor re-engineering, just not sure if the reverse is true.

Any chance your 2.73 gear might be going in a black C6?

Without checking the trans specs, I'd think it'd be like starting in 2nd gear always. Good gas mileage though.

Is this 08 diff regeared? If not, then you're going to be downgrading in gearing. Acceleration is going to be poor.

Is there a reason why you would want to put an auto diff in your manual car?

He's asking for me. I have a 05 m6 diff that exploded last night. He was local and has a diff for sale, but its from an 08 auto and thats why he was asking. What is my best option for replacing the diff. What years will be a direct swap for me? I'm not able to drive the car until its fixed, so I would like to get it done this week. Hoxxoh suggested a c5 diff for cost effective reasons, but again I want something that will be similar to (or) stock, but maybe a newer year that doesn't have the weak diff issue. Thanks guys!

c5 z06 will fit and will have the same gearing. and it will be stronger than the 05 (go figure). if you go with the auto, it has a different gear set and like said above, acceleration will be slower. try to get something from a manual. there are a few vendors on here with good prices. hopfully i can drop a line to one of them (Zip). I havent changed mine out yet but I am going to by the end of the year and have read alot on here about doing it.

Thanks for the help man. I heard you need a custom bracket made though, when going to a c5 diff? What year above 05 is a direct bolt on? I know it might be a bit more expensive, but paying the shop to custom fab me some brackets at $85/hr labor might end up running just as much as buying a used c6 diff.

None of them are.
If they can be made to fit it's likely going to require either a $550.00 adaptor plate (I believe 'RPM Transmissions' makes it) and/or a transmission output shaft swap which (if needed) could mean far more labor costs than a mere bracket to install a C5 rear unfortunately.

If considering a C5 rear conversion, keep an eye on this thread maybe:

I read somewhere on here that if you get an 06+ diff, to take the stock adapter plate from the donor car and it should bolt right up to an 05 tranny? I am PRAYING that when the diff exploded it didn't tear up my tranny. It blew up so hard that it actually dented my Corsa exhaust canister

Thanks for the thread! I PM'd him to see if he would be interested in hooking me up with one of those bolt on adapters he made

From every one I have seen that blew up the diff some did damage to the trans. I hope you are a lucky one. Keep ups posted.

Yes but no so let me explain. The diff itself will bolt up with a new trans rear housing. We have them in stock and they are $379.95. The problem is the output shaft. The one in your manual is a smaller spline then the one in the A6 diff. It is not very often you blow a diff up without either breaking or bending the output shaft, so you need to check to make sure there is no runout on the output shaft. If so, then buy a ZO6 diff because you are going to have to replace the output shaft either way and you will not blow up the C6ZO6 diff.

Very true. The 05 uses a unique setup, so other than bolting another 05 diff, some sort of adapter or modification is going to be required. If you have the money, replace the output shaft and get a Z06 diff. Next option is the 06+ with tailhousing if the shaft isn't damaged. C5 diff is going to be the cheapest option. It's not as strong as the z06 or the 06+, but it is a big upgrade over the 05.
